STX films is still a young big studio, having launched only four years ago, but the studio has continued to set the bar high when it comes to theatrical releases.
2018 was a banner year for STX as the studio released 8 films. At this year’s CinemaCon, the studio brought there new slate of films to be released. STX chairman, Adam Fogelson, explained that the studio might be young, but they are in the business of “doing really meaning full business.” While most studios are centered around tentpoles, STX has strived to be artist friendly in our franchise film world. Needless to say, STX has also been on the forefront of female-driven films with 18% of their films directed by women and 64% of their films starring women.
Delivering on that commitment is STX’s upcoming release UglyDolls with Kelly Clarkson. This film is a first for STX as it is the studio’s first animated feature as well as Clarkson’s animated debut. Clarkson stars and leads the film as Moxy, the leader of the UglyDolls. Clarkson while at CinemaCon joked, “my character is 100% me.” Moxy is insatiable enteric as well as curious but is in search for something more— her human. Clarkson added though she loved the “no hair and no makeup” processed she thought she’d be a princess first, but admitted again, “ Moxie is totally more me.” Plus, Clarkson said, “having kids its really cool” and she noted that she loved the message of the film.
Clarkson’s co-star in UglyDolls, Pitbull agreed that it was the overall message of the film that drew him to the project. He said while at CinemaCon, “I love the message of UglyDolls.” He added, “in our social [media driven world we’ve become a] society of followers and likes and not leaders and unique” individuals.
Clarkson and Pitbull are just a few members of an incredible cast that makes up the film.
Adam Fogelson even joked that the film is the “Oceans 11 of musical talent.” The film has other famous faces like Nick Jonas, Janelle Monáe, Blake Shelton, Wanda Sykes, Gabriel Iglesias, Wang Leehom, Emma Roberts and Bebe Rexha.
