It’s rare that you find an artist who does fluidity so well but KaMillion, living up to her name, excels at almost every aspect of the music industry.Having written for high-profile artists such as Diddy’s Dirty Money, Trey Songz, Rihanna, Ariana Grande and Rick Ross- it’s safe to say she’s going for world domination. And fairly so. With a versatile flow and intricate pen game KaMillion sets herself apart as a rare and unique artist and songwriter. We caught up with her over the weekend, to get the inside scoop on her latest single “I Heart Banana” and upcoming projects.
Inspiration Behind Song:
“Well, it was kind of a joke I had been getting some DM’s from some girls that thought I was interested in their dude or whatever, so I was sitting in my room and I heard a dope track and it [the lyrics] just kind of came off the top of my head- like I don’t want him, I’m not interested, it’s okay you’re good, calm down. [laughs] And the Banana part for me, was one of my favorite parts. It kind of put a twist on it and made something that could potentially be vulgar, funny.”
On famed producer, Bangladesh producing the track:
“Working with him was dope, it was dope working with another like-soul. He made hits for other people and I feel like I’m blessed to be one of those number and I feel like it’s going to be successful, his track record is great. So, I had fun. And for me, when I’m creating it’s it’s all about vibes and energy, and being able to feed off of each other’s energy was cool.”
On Discovering Her Passion:
“I started writing music at a very young age and then I would present my songs. Like, I would book sessions and studios and then play my music super loud. So producers in the next room would have to come in and be like who’s that. I really pushed myself as an artist and then people were like “well you should write songs for people”, and I was like “I don’t really want to write songs for people” but through writing songs for others I discovered how to put records in perspective-like every record is not for you. And I feel like I have a great outlook on who Kamillion is and what my sound is, I know how to pick tracks for myself. I know what I want to talk about and I know what I want people to feel, and vibe to.”
On Women In Hip-Hop:
‘There aren’t a lot of female collaborations going on in hip-hop right now. I think it’s great so many female rappers are being brought to the forefront. I think it’s important people know we’re here forreal. And I think it’s so crazy some people will try to pit women against each other as if we all can’t be great.”
What To Look Out For in 2018:
“Right now we’re just dropping singles. We’re also going to shoot the video to banana, and there’s talks about going on a promo tour at the end of the year- because I am putting out an EP. So there are a lot of things that are being put into place right now.”
