On Saturday, iconic stage and film actress Julie Andrews was honored by the 2017 Hamptons International Film Festival.
The 25th edition of the festival, which is presented by Audi, features its strongest and most star studded line up to to date. HIFF and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences co-presented a special screening of Victor Victoria at Guild Hall. Ms. Andrews, won the Oscar for Original Song Score and Its Adaptation -or- Adaptation Score. After the screening, Ms. Andrews participated in a conversation with HIFF Co-Chairman Alec Baldwin, who then presented the Lifetime Achievement Award.
A special reception followed at a private residence in East Hampton. On the red carpet Andrews graciously stopped to speak with reporters. Read what she had to say below:
Why do you think the music in The Sound of Music in particular has resonated with fans for so long?
Julie Andrews: I just think it’s probably got something for everyone. It’s got a lot of joy, it’s got a lot of decency to it. It was a beautifully crafted film. I just got so lucky to be asked to be in it. I think it’s just one of those great iconic films that, thankfully, stood the test of time.
You also were in Mary Poppins, when that movie was first created what did you bring to the role?
Julie Andrews: The only thing I may have contributed was my early, early upbringing was in vaudeville, and musical. The songs had a kind of, vaudeville quality to them. A kind of “rumpty tum” sound that I felt I could embrace. I think that’s a small contribution.
What is your advice to aspiring actors?
Julie Andrews: I get asked the question a lot, and I mostly say that the chances are that something wonderful will pass by when you least expect it. So do your homework and be ready.
What was your favorite movie for the costumes? I loved Star!
Julie Andrews: I think you are right. I think you are right.
That’s your favorite?
Julie Andrews: One of them, yes.
Can you speak about your love of the Hamptons?
Julie Andrews: I certainly can. I mean, how could you not love the Hamptons? I mean this day has been just about the most perfect autumn day, hasn’t it? And I love it!
