Exclusive: Jocko Sims Talks ‘New Amsterdam’ Season 3 Surprise Return [VIDEO]

When New Amsterdam returned for its third season, viewers did not expect that Dr. Floyd Reynolds would also make his comeback to New Amsterdam Medical Center. Played by Jocko Sims, the surgeon on the NBC medical drama had moved away with his fiancée before the end of Season 2. Sims is here with The Knockturnal to tell us more about his surprise reappearance and more secrets coming our way this season.

Sims putting on his white coat for NBC follows his stint on Fox’s The Resident but is his first time on a medical show as a regular. The actor originally intended to pursue a medical career as a teen but switched plans for a theater degree. Nevertheless, he still got a tattoo of a medical symbol, and later called his 2018 casting as Dr. Reynolds a blend of two dreams. Now, he rejoins Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman, Tyler Labine, and Anupam Kher on set. He also comes back to a cast of real-life healthcare workers who make up the background characters, another aspect of his job that he loves and gets to learn from.

While the actual Covid-19 pandemic stalled the rollout of Season 3, writers incorporated their own pandemic into the lives of New Amsterdam’s frontline workers. Together the characters face a similar outbreak as well as tackling the regular conditions admitted into hospitals. Having left amidst the chaos, Dr. Reynolds came back to help the team on the show’s March 2nd season premiere.

Plus, healthcare overlaps with several social issues on the show, prompting in one way or another—as Sims mentioned—a needed box of Kleenex. An upcoming episode that struck Sims handles the disparity in salary of black doctors. He said he was dumbfounded when he heard the statistics and seemed eager for viewers to learn more about this occurrence. This episode is just one of the tokens in Season 3 of New Amsterdam.

Catch Jocko Sims and his castmates in new episodes on Tuesdays on NBC.
