Celebrity designer Jerome LaMaar debuted his 5:31 SS17 Collection during this NYFW featuring multicultural fusion and evolution of the human race.
The fifth generation New Yorker has worked with a number of celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Kimora Lee Simmons, Beyonce, and Amber Rose. This season, Jerome draws inspiration from the future and avant garde structure with a key feature of Swaroski crystals.
We had a chance to speak one on one with Jerome during his sundeck presentation at Pier 59 Studios:
“The inspiration behind this collection referenced the evolution of the planet – like a family portrait. It also represents something that is obvious to happen, the rising tides. So you oceanic references that’s shown in the silhouettes, shoes, etc. But what’s really significant is just looking at the gender neutralism of the collection, guys are wearing girls’ clothes and girls are wearing guys’ clothes but it’s embellished in a fun way. ”
The color palette included a wide array of neutral tones contrasted with playful patterns such as camouflage and oceanic ornaments. The collection’s focus is very thought out, constructive, self reflective of the designers vision for his artistry and imagination.
“My dad is in the military so that is where a lot of the camouflage came from. My mom is all shine and sparkles, and it just kind represents my family and how we are all mix of different colors. We have great sense of style and we’re very playful so in a way it just sums up everything.
The kimono is my main piece, I’ve been wearing a kimono forever. That is the most embellished piece, it has all these cool brooches and patches on it that is symbolic of the maximalism that I see for my brand.”
We got backstage access for 5:31 Jerome presentation from Cutler/Redken Salon. The Lead Stylist was Jenny Balding.
