A quick walk from the L train’s Bedford Avenue subway station is Nan Xiang Express.
If the name “Nan-Xiang” sounds familiar, don’t worry, you’re not going crazy—Nan Xiang Express is the fast-casual sister restaurant to Michelin-recommended Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. The Chinese eatery just opened in Williamsburg this past Spring, founded “on a mission to make Michelin-recommended quality Shanghai-style dim sum accessible to everyone, by offering high-quality soup dumplings at an affordable price point.” In fact, the menu averages at about $20 per person! Talk about a great (and delicious!) New York City deal.
Nan Xiang Express is known for putting modern twists on traditional Shanghainese recipes and a commitment to using fresh and locally sourced ingredients.
Some of our Nan Xiang Express favorites are:
- The Crab Meat & Pork Soup Dumplings – on the tables of Nan Xiang Express they leave cards explaining how to properly eat a soup dumpling: Step 1) Dispense the provided soy sauce and vinegar onto soup spoon Step 2) Place soup dumpling on top of spoon Step 3) Take a small bite and enjoy the slightly sweet yet savory broth Step 4) Take another bite and enjoy the delicious combination of meat, broth, and soy-sauce vinegar mix. Best enjoyed hot and tastes great even without the sauce!
- Pan Fried Pork Buns – the crispy outer texture of the bun combined with the slightly fluffy inside and slightly sweet pork was absolutely mouth-watering. A trip to Nan Xiang Express is worth it for this item alone.
- Cucumber Salad with Garlic – calling all vegans—and non-vegans! This flavorful yet refreshing veggie appetizer will appeal to even the most hardcore of meat eaters.
Other menu items include Shangai fried udon noodles, siu mai, noodle soup, and much more. The Williamsburg store is located at 167 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11249, and will be open every day from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information about Nan Xiang Express, visit their website at www.nanxiangexpress.com or follow them on Instagram at @nanxiangexpress.
