In recent times we have seen a resurgence of vintage stores and it is apparent that pre-owned clothes are the new “it” items.

While this is great for the environment it is also allowing people to find their personal aesthetic rather than following seasonal trends. The array of vintage clothing in New York is incredibly gigantic. It’s possible to find almost anything from historic Louis Vuitton trunks to ‘80s Bowie inspired Flaires. Being in a city where fashion takes precedence the possibilities are limitless. Where does one find these ‘signature’ pieces? Below is a list of unique vintage stores in Manhattan that are sure to impress.

188 Galerie

This Lafayette street boutique is a rare gem, the lavishly decorated store features a curated collection of vintage items that have been acquired by owner Greg Urra through years of global travel, flea markets, auctions, and bazaars. The store carries labels like Comme des garçon, Rick Owens, Galliano, Chanel, and John Paul Gaultier to name a few. The pieces have a distinct uniqueness to them. Accompanying this array of clothing the store also features stationary, handmade paper, and small artisanal items that make great gifts. Urra combines his passion for vintage clothing with the essence of today. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and always happy to share their wisdom of vintage clothing. Urra advises “never trust size labels on second-hand clothing as they may have been altered. If you like the look of something, try it.” This is absolutely true the possibilities are larger and often what we believe is our size may not be the case with vintage pieces due to pattern variances and tag alterations.188 Galerie has been a staple for designers, stylists, influencers, and vintage enthusiasts from across the world.

Tips

The basic items are great to add personal touches such as emblems, patches, embroidery, sequins, beads or any notion that encompasses your aesthetic.
