As the cherry blossom season approached us quickly, so did the Inaugural Thalia Potamianos Lecture.
This event takes place annually at the beautiful campus of Georgetown University. This year’s lecture was delivered by Professor Peter Frankopan. Professor Frankopan is a British historian who is known for his focus on the history of the Mediterranean, Byzantine Empire, Caucasus, the Balkans, and Russia, as well as the interdependence of Islam and Christianity. In addition, he is also a Writer and Hotelier. What many appreciated about this lecture was learning about Greek culture and its influence; what many did not expect was the correlation between ancient history and its relevance to our current news. We had the chance to speak to a few individuals from different demographics to get some insight into what everyone enjoyed most about the lecture. We found one common theme: Everyone was impressed and shocked by the fact that ancient Greek culture is still influencing us today. Alfred, a Junior at Georgetown University, expressed that he was blown away by the fact that Professor Frankopan explained a lot about ancient Greek and easily tied the history to the unfortunate circumstances happening between Russia and Ukraine. He also mentioned that the lecture will be a conversation starter because this is not your typical lecture or common knowledge. After the discourse, all guests attended a reception outside of the auditorium where everyone had a chance to ask further questions related to the Inaugural Thalia Potamianos Lecture. While we enjoyed the reception, we also had the chance to interview a high school professor and his student who both shared their excitement and eye-opening experience. The Inaugural Thalia Potamianos Lecture was fit for any and everyone! It was amazing to witness how everything tends to connect even when we may think that there is no correlation.
