On The Scene: Housing Works Design on a Dime Opening Night Reception

I arrived to Design on a Dime too late. It was only 8:30 p.m., but nearly everything had sold.

The Cy Twombly’s, the Saarinen tables, the custom sofas, the drink wares, the books and knick-knacks. Perhaps unfortunate for myself, but everything selling was the best thing that could happen for this event, conceived by James Huniford. The concept of Design on a Dime is ambitious, but simple: assemble 60 famed designers to create rooms filled with chic designs, furniture, art, and more, all with retail prices slashed.

Who benefits? All proceeds go towards AIDs research and NYC staple Housing Works in an effort to construct a home for 28 New Yorkers living with AIDs. The posh but noble evening took place at Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea and was lead by sponsors such as Elle Decor, with its soft green room with white accents such as hand-shaped chairs and lattices, Lowes Home Improvement, with its construction minded designs, and Benjamin Moore paints, with a showcase of interior-designer favorite super white (which happens to cover my own walls).

Other rooms included an HBO GIRLS-inspired room, a room by Ralph Lauren, as well as global forces in design. Drinks were provided by Hendricks, Whispering Angel, Chateau Declan’s, and Milagro. The music was a fun and inspiring mix that complimented the chic environment perfectly. The rooms will be visible to the public this weekend only, with a few things still for sale. At the very least, get the opportunity to get cozy with some of the best designers on earth, for a good cause.
