On Thursday, December 5, the prestigious 2024 Root 100 Gala took center stage at the iconic Apollo Theater in Harlem, celebrating this year’s most influential Black Americans. Hosted by the brilliant comedian Roy Wood Jr., the evening featured powerhouse performances by Grammy-nominated Andra Day and the incomparable Ledisi, creating a memorable night of inspiration and celebration.
Despite the chill of a December evening in New York, the warmth of camaraderie and mutual respect among the honorees and attendees was undeniable. The night underscored the significance of honoring the contributions of Black individuals across arts, media, politics, and beyond.
Notable honorees in attendance included Don Lemon, Tamron Hall, Aldis Hodge, Wendell Pierce, Laura Coates, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, and many more. This was my second time meeting Don Lemon, who, as always, exuded charm and approachability. During our conversation on the red carpet, he humorously invited me to check the label on the back of his suit when I asked who he was wearing. It was a lighthearted yet profound moment for me, as I took the opportunity to express my respect for his work in media and journalism—a space he continues to navigate with grace and authenticity.
Another standout moment of the evening was my conversation with the beautiful actress, producer, and advocate Dewanda Wise. In a moment that showcased her mindfulness and generosity, Dewanda came over to speak with me on the red carpet, even as she was being rushed inside. That brief yet intentional interaction spoke volumes about her character. It’s these seemingly minuscule details—her genuine consideration for others and commitment to her craft—that have undoubtedly shaped her impactful career. In that moment, she made me and everyone in the room “root” for her. We root for stars like Dewanda whose roots are deeply connected and whose branches inspire us all.
Special guests such as Mona Scott-Young, Tracy Morgan, Jawn Murray, Flex Anderson, Noma Dumezweni, Edwin Hodge, and Skye P. Marshall added to the evening’s allure, demonstrating the depth and diversity of Black talent.
The Root 100 Gala remains a vital platform for celebrating those who have made significant strides in their fields while uplifting the broader Black community. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of highlighting and honoring our stories. If we don’t celebrate ourselves, who will?
The evening left attendees inspired, illustrating that perseverance and dedication can lead to remarkable achievements. Being in a room filled with trailblazers was a poignant reminder of what’s possible when we continue to contribute to and push boundaries in our respective fields.
The Root 100 Gala is not just an event but a movement, and it’s an honor to attend and witness the legacy it continues to build. For all of us in the arts, media, and beyond, it’s a reminder to keep going—because one day, it might be us standing on that stage, receiving our flowers. Until then, we continue to strive, inspired by the incredible stories of the 2024 honorees.
Here’s to The Root 100: thank you for shining a light on Black excellence. May this tradition of celebrating brilliance and resilience continue for years to come.
