Denis Villeneuve just can’t stop dreaming of origami unicorns
It’s been more than thirty years since Ridley Scott’s renowned Blade Runner hit the big screen. Since that time, the film has come to rest amongst some of the most revered neo noir films to date. From comic books to television shows, many have attempted to recreate the iconic atmosphere, rich thematic elements and gorgeously crafted set designs of what Scott calls his “most complete and personal film.”
Unfortunately, while Scott will not be creatively involved in Blade Runner 2049, the new iteration will be in the capable hands of Arrival’s Denis Villeneuve. Focusing on issues of environmentalism—a theme extensively concentrated on in the first few drafts of the original film—Villeneuve explained that “the climate has gone berserk — the ocean, the rain, the snow is all toxic.” With original screenplay writer Hampton Fancher returning to write the follow-up film, it seems as though the writer will finally have his thematic wish granted.
Set thirty years since the events of the last film, an LAPD blade runner by the name of K (Ryan Gosling) discovers a potentially catastrophic secret, leading him to track down Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) who has been missing for the last thirty years. With Earth on the verge of complete environmental collapse, K hopes that with the help of Deckard they can stop the danger that lies ahead.
With a stellar ensemble cast, a capable director and screenplay writer, and a score eerily similar to the original flick, this is one sci-fi sequel that is set to live up to expectations. Check out the trailer below for yourself before catching the film October 6, 2017.
