Hakan Akkaya managed to make a bold statement at New York Fashion Week. His collection can be summed up in three words: punk, grunge, and eclectic.
The Turkish designer managed to produce on a eye-popping show for his Fall/Winter 2017 collection, complete with looks that would fit someone who has a fearless, badass attitude, and intimidating demeanor.
The materials he used comprised mainly of leather, fish net, cotton, nylon, lots of zippers, and fur (unaware if it’s faux or not). Akkaya paid extreme attention to detail, textures, and cuts of his outfit–each one was different, unique, and screamed freedom. Each look was either all black or all white.
Many of the outfits were minimalistic. You’d see a cut-out bodysuit with a an oversized fishnet coverup, leaving the edgy models bare in many places. But then his collection took a turn when he included hooded dresses that cover up the body. He manages to put frills on everything, from shirts to leather pants, and layers materials onto many items. Many of his sweatshirts had sideways zippers. He transformed metallic sequins and used them to fully cover pants, dresses, and jackets. Hakkan also quilted a lot of his jackets, for a puffy effect.
Unlike many fashion show, Hakan Akkaya had both women and male models. Almost every piece in the collection could be categorized as unisex. He even put a burka-like top on men that had an attached headscarf and he gave and gave women bolder burkas, dressed over skinny leather pants. The collection was free from gender, race, or stereotypical labels. Many of the male model also wore high platform leather boots.
Hakan Akkaya has a showroom located on 155 Chrystie Street, New York, NY and in Istanbul in Huzur Mahallesi, Orkide Sokak. Visit his website at: www.hakanakkaya.com.tr
