Check out Milwaukee rapper Huey V.
Milwaukee rapper Huey V. is a star in the making. Realizing his success meant leaving his hometown and migrating to Florida after signing a deal with Warehouse Music Group. Huey’s been working on his craft since he was 14-years-old, finding inspiration in Kanye and Kendrick’s music. It wasn’t until he heard Kendrick’s “Rigamortus” Instrumental that Huey began taking music seriously and pursuing it as a career. After harnessing his craft he quickly signed to Warehouse Music Group and released his debut single and music video for “No Regrets.” Now Huey is gearing up to release more music and is currently working on his forthcoming EPs and Album. Find out what else Huey shared with us in our interview below!
The Knockturnal: What is the music scene like in Milwaukee?
Huey V: It’s a small community. We don’t got a magnifying glass on the community. A lot of our events are self-set-up. Milwaukee is more geared towards other genres like indie music.
The Knockturnal: What was it like growing up in Milwaukee?
Huey V: It was interesting, to say the least. Normal kid without money and the best schools. It’s a dead-end city, the opportunity don’t go too far outside of that unless you create them yourself, so a lot of people have to leave. A lot of dance wars, basement parties in the summertime. Going to the lake was one of the best things we could do, but now the lake is a little different because of gun violence. I think of Milwaukee like The City of God, without the palm trees.
The Knockturnal: When did you start making music?
Huey V: I wrote my first song at 14. It was a Kanye song, “Power” that came on and inspired me to write a song.
The Knockturnal: What was the turning point for you? When did you know you want to pursue music seriously?
Huey V: I heard the instrumental to Kendrick Lamar’s “Rigamortus” and that’s when I was like. “I need to start taking this seriously.” When you hear the instrumental you can hear the authenticity and emotion to it. You and your kid can both relate to it.
The Knockturnal: How did it feel signing to Warehouse Music Group?
Huey V: Ima be real with you. Originally I didn’t think this was real. It happened so fast that it took me dropping “No Regrets,” which is recently, but it didn’t hit me until recently. You have to watch things come to life.
The Knockturnal: How did it feel releasing your first single “No Regrets”
Huey V: I was like, “I gotta get this shit out because I heard it so many times.” You create so much music that by the time people hear it and call it a masterpiece, I got 20 more masterpieces in my back pocket. I’m just waiting for y’all to hear my music.
The Knockturnal: Can you talk about your upcoming single & video for “Persuasion.”
Huey V: That’s gonna be super fun, I smile in this video a lot more often. I don’t got the rapper ugly face like in “No Regrets.” The song is about what it feels like to be in Miami with this newfound success. It speaks on lust and temptation.
The Knockturnal: Who are your top 5 favorite rappers?
Huey V: My top 5 are Kendrick Lamar, Tupac, Kanye, Big L, and number 5 I’d say myself.
The Knockturnal: What else are you currently working on?
Huey V: I’m working on an EP, a couple of EPs, and an album. The album’s gonna be a depiction of my journey to my coming of age story. My entire life has changed before my eyes.
