Fox Upfront 2019 announces two new crime dramas, “Prodigal Son” and “Deputy”!
Prodigal Son:
Prodigal Son immediately begins its trailer with a focus on the psychological development of Malcolm Bright. The trailer introduces its primary antagonist, the main character’s father, Martin Whitly, at a pivotal moment in the main character’s childhood. The cold and detached way that the young child watches his father get taken in by law enforcement emphasizes the immense psychological stress that molded him as he got older and learned more about what his father had done. As the show progresses, Malcolm becomes a detective working with the NYPD to catch serial murderers like his father, using his unique upbringing as a skillset to effectively solve cases. Because Malcolm grew up with his father, he ended up with a distinct perspective into the thought process of serial killers, which is a realistic explanation for his almost psychic-like ability to solve crimes. The trailer continues to touch on his dramatic family life, with his undeniable connection to his father causing friction between his relationship with his mother and sister, who would prefer to forget about the past. The psychological exploration of the complex main character, along with this Silence of the Lambs-esque relationship with his father is primarily what makes Prodigal Son a compelling series, bringing a realistic take on the classic detective drama genre. Starring Tom Payner, Michael Sheen, Bellamy Young, Lou Diamond Phillips, Halston Sage, Aurora Perrineau, Frank Harts, and Keiko Agena.

Deputy:
Deputy sets the tone with a fast-paced, action-packed trailer that both emphasizes important themes in the show and establishes the central conflict that the main character faces. The main character is introduced as the archetypical “loose cannon” deputy, who will do anything it takes to win, which causes friction between him and his superiors. By some twist of fate, he gets promoted to being the new sheriff of Los Angeles County, a role which both elevates him but also provides him with an entirely new set of issues and conflicts to face. The main character’s distaste for following rules and morally-ambiguous methods are some of the primary themes for this show. By not introducing the main character as an obvious force of “good,” Deputy invites its audience to make their own moral judgements and opinions as to whether they are willing to follow the main character on his quest to fight crime, or if sometimes the ends don’t justify the means. Starring Stephen Dorff, Yara Martinez, Brian Van Holt, Siena Goines, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Shane Paul McGhie, and Mark Moses.
