“Last Christmas” follows 26-year old Kate (Emilia Clarke) throughout London as she tries to figure out where to lay her head each night.
Her wages from working at a year-round Christmas decoration shop for a Chinese woman named Santa (Michelle Yeoh) barely afford her enough to buy the occasional chicken sandwich and a shot of vodka. She’s broke, promiscuous, aloof, and manages to burn every bridge in her life through her lack of concern for others. In fact, the only people who seem to care about her unconditionally are her parents, who were by her side through a life-threatening illness and its heartbreaking aftermath, even though she has a hard time returning the favor. That is–until she meets Tom (Henry Golding)–the handsome, selfless man who refuses to use a phone, volunteers at a homeless shelter, and goes missing for days at a time.
Last Christmas is a movie where you’re either going to “get it” or you’re not. The cast has a few familiar faces with loyal fan bases, and the humor is very clean and good-natured, but that may not be enough to appeal to most. It’s cute, sometimes a little awkward, but the movie waits until the very end to reveal why Kate’s life of unfortunate circumstances is worth watching observing other than to have a good laugh and feel sorry for everyone in her life.
If you’re looking for something light-hearted with a heart-warming backstory, Last Christmas may be a solid choice.
The film is now playing.
