On Tuesday June 21, 2016 the Museum of the Moving Image hosted a special screening of “Breaking a Monster” a film by director Luke Meyer and producer Tom Davis.

The film is a documentary that follows the story and early success of the band Unlocking the Truth. Unlocking the truth is truly unique as they are a group of young African teens who are revamping heavy metal. Unlocking the Truth has created a new wave of heavy metal followers who appreciate their melodic riffs and complicated cadences, while still keeping the spirit of a classical heavy metal band. Breaking a Monster follows the band as they pursue their dreams. Even without a releasing an album, they manage to attract the attention of many including mega music conglomerate Sony.

The documentary focuses mostly on the ever changing dynamics of the band, the band’s management Alan Sacks, and the band’s relationships with their families and friends as they go from prepubescent kids who love wrestling and anime and find comfort and joy in playing the music that sets the background for those platforms, to teenage anomalies who have entered the professional world of entertainment. The film is worth checking out especially if you are a lover of music or want to see how the corporate world affects the love and purity of something as joyous as music for Unlocking the Truth.

The film opens in NYC this Friday at the Landmark Sunshine, LA nextFriday July 1st and will continue to expand to theaters across the country in July.
