California Native and electronic dance music producer and DJ, ‘Ookay’ sat down with The Knockturnal at the 2017 Electric Zoo Festival: The 6th Boro during Labor Day Weekend.
The 25-year old from San Diego, California is known for his top shit single “Thief” with over five million views so far on Youtube. Flux Pavilion just released his very own remix of the hit.
Ookay just announced his”WOW! COOL!” tour which launched in July at Lollapalooza in Chicago. The live show will bring his amazing colorful visuals that he is known for to life.
With his tour setting off and his hit single, Ookay is all about concentrating on himself, but that didn’t stop him from making an awesome collaboration with Fox Stevenson for “Lighthouse”that was just released this past month.
Abraham Laguna, Ookay’s real name, sits down and tells us about the real reason he chose the name and the struggle upon finding it.
“I wanted the name Okay, with just one O and a period at the end and Soundcloud had said it was taken by someone else, and I go ‘dang it.’ So I tried two Y’s, that was taken and then two O’s wasn’t taken and I go ‘yes!”
Back in 2015, Ookay performed at EDC on Father’s Day and brought his father who is also happens to be a bassist on stage for a solo performance.
“I was playing on Father’s Day and my dad was going to come anyways and I was like ‘Why don’t you bring your bass. Why don’t you come on stage with me.’ He was like ‘really?’ So we got into the studio the week or two before the festival and we put our minds together,” Ookay said. “It was a very special moment, because a lot of people probably didn’t get to see their parents.”
After his third time attending the biggest music festivals in America, Coachella. Ookay automatically knew he needed to make ‘Thief.’
“I was going through a lot of life changed, I just moved into LA and I was starting to really learn who I was. Coachella was an eyeopening thing for me. Cause I was like ‘this is what these artists have, it’s like that song that really… as soon as they hear the first second they already know what it is’ and I was like ‘I gotta do something like that.’ All my emotions really came out to that song.”
Be sure to check out Ookay’s scheduled tour and catch him performing ‘Thief’ live.
