It’s spooky season, and Hulu has a new horror-comedy just in time titled “Bad Hair”.

The horror satirical film has a star-studded cast, featuring Kelly Rowland, Blair Underwood, Lena Waithe, Elle Lorraine, Laverne Cox and many other notables. The Knockturnal had the opportunity to speak with the cast about the new film. Paired duo, Lena Waithe and Elle Lorraine spoke about fitting into new environments. “Honestly, I think that’s a part of a thing that we can all relate to” says Lorraine, “We’ve all assimilated at times and we’ve all made small sacrifices that have led us very far from who we are…I’ve been in relationships where I look up, and I’m like ‘what am I doing’” Lorraine adds.

Anna, played by Elle Lorraine, is depicted as a video journalist for a hip-hop television company trying desperately to further her career. She struggles with self acceptance after comparing herself to the appearance of women who rapidly gained traction in same career field. It’s after a meeting with a new boss that she is convinced to change her appearance by getting a weave. The hairstylist, Virgie, played by Laverne Cox transforms her into someone unrecognizable. Cox talks about her own relationship with her hair. “I feel great blonde, -with a little beach wave- blonde. I just feel like myself, it’s so bizarre and when I think about it, it’s kind of weird but I feel like myself in variations of this. Like, maybe not this bright blonde but different shades of blonde with kind of a beach wave. It feels like Laverne”.

Anna’s father Amos, played by the handsome Blair Underwood, tried to convince Anna of the beauty in knowing her Black heritage and loving herself. Underwood spoke about being a father to a young Black girl and the importance of teaching his kids where they came from. “Being conscious or ‘woke’ of who you are and who your people are and your heritage and your culture I think, is critical for us to move forward” says Underwood. “It’s knowledge, it’s knowledge of self and it’s important to know those things.”

Bad Hair premieres on Hulu on October 23rd.
