Singer/songwriter SoMo—aka Joseph Somers-Morales— first burst onto the scene in 2012 with his independently released mixtape, My Life. My Life spawned the Texas native’s first hit single “Ride”- which has since been certified platinum, and garnered him a recording contract with Republic Records who released his self-titled debut album in February 2014.
This Fall, SoMo released his My Life II mixtape to coincide with his “Fallin’ Up Tour.” The 36 date headline tour sees SoMo hitting major cities in the U.S. with special guests Kirko Bangz and Jordan Bratton. See dates HERE. Upon its release, My Life IIdebuted #2 on the R&B / Soul charts and Top 10 on the overall iTunes album chart.
You started on YouTube making covers. How was it like being a YouTube sensation?
SoMo: It was actually unexpected. I just started putting up videos and everything just kind of exploded and I went from there. Now I’m in New York and I am about to sell out, I mean I did sell out my show for tomorrow night. So I’m excited.
You’re currently on the Fallin’ Up Tour, what is you favorite thing about being on tour and performing in front of live audiences?
SoMo: Really just the fact that so many people come out and know all my original music is amazing to me. Just to be able to get on stage and to hear everyone singing the songs that I wrote. It’s an awesome feeling.
Your new mixtape My Life II made major waves on the R&B charts, so what’s your favorite song on the project?
SoMo: Well they all really are my babies, but I really love “You Can Buy Everything” and the message behind it. It was a freestyle completely for me. The emotions are really real and raw and there. I love performing that one. It probably one of my favorites, but definitely all of them as a whole are my favorites.
Also with your project what were the influences, or maybe what were the influences for My Life II?
SoMo: I’m really influenced by modern day music and pop culture in general. I really just try to do my thing sonically in that world and go with the current sounds. I like to just experiment and try to create new things, but still have that current R&B feel to it.
You also have a new album coming out soon?
SoMo: I am, I am working on my sophomore album now.
Can you maybe tell us what collabs we can expect on the album?
SoMo: I have some big names I’m going to be working with on the song writing side. Some big producers that once I right the songs I’ll let y’all know.
If you could work with anyone who would it be? Dead or alive.
SoMo: Dead or Alive? I’m going to go with Michael Jackson. I always say someone different in every interview, but today I’m going to say Michael Jackson. I’m feeling that vibe. Obviously he’s a legend.
Is there anything else that you want to do besides music?
SoMo: I want to do everything that’s possible for me to do in this life. I don’t know. I just want to enjoy life and I’ll see what comes after music, but I definitely feel like music is what I am suppose to do so I plan on doing it for a long time.
If you could tell your fans anything what would you tell them?
SoMo: I would tell them to love themselves and to always remember less stress more love and to live by that and just be the best person you could be. And thank you, to all my fans, for supporting me and loving me and letting me do what I love.
Is there anything else that you maybe just want to talk about with your tour or your new project coming up?
SoMo: Really just thank you to all the New York fans out there that are coming out to the show. It’s sold out again. I’ve been to New York a bunch of times and it’s always really fun. So thank you.
