Ruby Rose sat down with The Knockturnal to discuss her role in the upcoming Lionsgate film Vanquish starring opposite Morgan Freeman.
“I play Victoria and I’m Damon’s caretaker – Damon is played by the one and only Morgan Freeman – and my daughter Lilian is played by Juju,” says the Australian actress and model. “My character has had a life where she did her time for some of the things she had to do growing up and she made a decision once she had a daughter to never return to doing that again.
“Morgan puts her in a very compromising and uncomfortable position where she has to return to that life to save her daughter and she has to go out and accomplish this all in one night.”
Ruby, who’s known for her roles in Orange Is The New Black and Batwoman says she’s been a fan of the director George Gallo.
She said knowing that Gallo and Freeman were attached to the film before signing on got her excited and knew she wanted to do the film.
“As I read the script I was like ‘please be good, please be good’ and I was just really impressed because this is a character I’ve never played,” Ruby said. “I’ve never played a character that isn’t enjoying it or it isn’t her job to do that or she isn’t a villain – in the action genre anyway. Every time they’re enjoying going in there kicking butt, and fighting crime or being evil. But this was such a different layered approach to someone in that kind of position and I loved that. And I also know my mom had me at 20, a single mom, and I know I saw her when she was trying to do everything and anything it took to take care of me so I could really channel that in this character.”
Throughout the film, Ruby rides a motorcycle during high-speed chases and gets herself in some sticky situations.
“The training wasn’t too bad because I’ve done quite a lot of different stunts throughout life and also I do those kinds of things in my real life,” she said “I’m a very physical person and I enjoy a bit of adrenaline. I did most of the stunts except some of the motorcycle stuff. I didn’t do that scene where she drives the motorcycle under a moving truck. I kind of went ‘I think that’s a job better done by a professional.”
“Driving around a 70,000 Mclaren just for fun, I was like this is a very very fun film to do!” she added.
