In the Amazon Prime Original “Picture This,” Bridgerton season two actress Simone Ashley stars as Pia, a chronically single photographer in her late 20s.

Pia is under pressure: her self-owned business is struggling to stay on its feet, and her family is constantly pestering her about her lack of a love life. As her younger sister’s wedding nears, Pia’s mother Laxi (Sindhu Vee) hires a spiritual adviser, who predicts that Pia will find the love of her life within the next five dates.

As chaotic and uncomfortable dates ensue, Pia runs into her ex-boyfriend, Charlie (Fiennes Tiffin). Funnily enough, he’s also the wedding’s best man. Directed by Prarthana Mohan, the witty and sincere romantic comedy follows Pia’s humorous and heartfelt quest for love.

On Feb. 5, Ashley spoke with the Knockturnal about her experience filming at an early film screening in partnership with Brown Girl Magazine.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

The Knockturnal: What did your filming process entail? Were there any filming moments that you found particularly rewarding or challenging?

Ashley: This was my first time doing a rom-com. I think it was both challenging and rewarding to convey joy and to make people smile and laugh. I think, when you’re doing something like a drama you can take it quite seriously. I actually think the real challenge was just letting go and conveying that kind of happiness because you can’t take everything seriously.

The Knockturnal: The rom-com has become a movie staple. What sets this film apart from others?

Ashley: I think it’s unique because we’re seeing a South Asian woman and a South Asian family at the center of the movie. And I think it’s nice to see a woman take the lead. The film focuses on Pia’s journey and her story, and she’s supported by the men she’s going on dates with.

The Knockturnal: What do you hope viewers take away from the film?

Ashley: I hope people can feel happy and have a smile on their face while watching — I want them to be transported into the world of the movie.

“Picture This” is now available to stream on Prime Video.
