We caught up with Nash Overstreet at the 2016 BMI Pop Awards recently.

Tell me about working with Meghan Trainor. She’s really inspirational for so many girls.

Nash Overstreet: You know, it’s funny because on the women empowerment trip, the song that I wrote is called “Woman Up,” for Meghan. It was written, I feel like 3 years ago, I could be off by a year. It was written with her and a few friends of mine, before she had a record deal, before “All About That Bass” ever came out. It really stood the test of time, and has just been released on her new album. I’m loving the responses I’m already seeing on social media and from the fans back and forth, from her and going on Instagram and stuff. She just put a teaser up, kind of like the behind the scenes stuff of it two or three days ago. So it’s really exciting.

How do you come up with a fresh take on women being okay with being who they are?

Nash Overstreet: Yeah, it’s definitely such a personal thing to really give women the power to stand up and change that double standard that’s been a problem in society for so long. We originally wrote this song, and had this idea, and then she took it and really, really reworked it and made it her own, put all of herself and her soul into it. I love what came out of it.

Tell me about other collaborations that you have done.

Nash Overstreet: I worked with Rachel Platten who I just ran into out there, and I did a song, “Angels in Chelsea”, for her. We had a blast, probably writing 4 or 5 songs last year or two, and I was in the band Hot Chelle Rae, I had plenty of songs like, “Tonight, Tonight” and “I Like it Like That” I’m finally just about to release some solo music coming up in the next couple of months so I’m really excited about that. It’s all hush hush, and kind of behind the scenes right now, but I’m gearing up for a video, I’ve got the single, so we’re ready to go.

We’re here honoring Taylor Swift, what do you think this show represents for women?

Nash Overstreet: I actually did a collaboration with Taylor Swift as my first professionally cut song. We did a parody song “Thug Story” with her and T-Pain, that I wrote and produced. We toured with her in Australia for like a month solid. She is an amazing, amazing artist, one of the most brilliant artists with the most longevity that I can see, that’s been around in a long time.
