Where there is pleasure there is also pain, and Starz’s new series Hightown, highlights both sensations in the captivating new crime drama series.

Set in the vibrant town of Cape Cod, Hightown touches on the topics of the opioid epidemic and the LGBTQ community. Things turn dark quickly as the female lead, Jackie Quiñones, played by Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire), discovers a dead body washed up on the shore.

Jackie Quiñones is a hard-partying agent with the National Marine Fisheries Service and after a wild night, her life takes a wrong turn, as she slowly finds herself in the middle of a drug trafficking operation.

“She was following her instincts, she was driven to it. Jackie’s in a place in her life where she’s struggling with recovery and addiction. She’s just starting to face the music and is trying to be honest with herself. When she comes across this body it somehow draws some kind of purpose out of her. It gives her a mission that starts to fill her void,” Raymund explained while speaking exclusively with The Knockturnal about her character in the series.

The powerful cast includes Monica Raymund, James Badge Dale, Riley Voelkel, Shane Harper, Amaury Nolasco, Atkins Estimond, and Dohn Norwood. Hightown was created by Rebecca Cutter, executive produced by Gary Lennon, Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Rachel Morrison.

Hightown creator Rebecca Cutter tells The Knockturnal the inspiration behind this series is “she loves the ball-breaking crime genre, and when she had the image of the character for Jackie Quiñones, it was really the spark for the show—this Don Draper as a woman with a big appetite.”

The crime drama series premieres on May 17th on Starz.
