Letitia Wright & Director Agnieszka Smoczynka talk ‘The Silent Twins’ at red carpet NY premiere at Metrograph.
The Silent Twins tells the story of June and Jennifer Gibbons who were Welsh twins born to Caribbean immigrants in the 1960s. They were severely bullied and ostracized for being Black. This caused the two sisters to retreat inside and stop communicating. To others around them, they believed the sisters suffered from many disabilities, when in actuality the sisters did what they felt was best: Communicate exclusively to each other.
The Knockturnal was on the scene to speak with both Letitia Wright and Agnieszka Smoczynska about the film. Letitia Wright, who plays one of the sisters talks more about her role in the film, the production, and collaborating with her wonderful director. She says “I became familiar with the twins’ stories from back in the day. I saw a documentary, and it really intrigued me and I always wondered if it would be a movie and when the opportunity came about for it to become a movie, my director hit me up. She wanted me to green light it”. She also shared when finding her twin, Tamara Lawrance, they became co-producers on the film in making their voices were heard as Black women.
Director, Agnieszka Smoczynska shares more about the casting experience, and her role as the director. Smoczynska says, “From the beginning I knew Letitia was June Gibbons. When trying to find her sister it was a long process but I have to admit from the beginning we knew that it was Tamara Lawrance. Tamara has this kind of depth, and she also has this kind of chemistry between herself and Letitia.”
