After a film screening of the new Apple TV+ film, ‘Sharper’, the cast and director join a conversation with The Knockturnal to discuss the movie and what it took to make this film noir come to life.
How It Began
After Brian Gatewood and Alessandra Tanaka wrote the first draft of the film within six weeks, they sent it off to Julianne Moore, who fell in love instantly. Not only did she want to help produce the film, but she told the screenwriters that she could see herself playing Madeline, one of the main characters in this ensemble narrative.
The Ensemble
The story follows five characters as they navigate a world of lies, betrayal, passion and freedom. Madeline, Max, Tom and Sandy are integral characters that affect one another’s lives with the decisions they make. Another character that finds themselves in the center of the labyrinth is John Lithgow’s character, Richard Hobbes – a calculated and sentimental billionaire who falls in love with Madeline. The twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat.
The Big Apple
New York City becomes the sixth character of the film as it takes on a life of its own. Each character’s story line, according to the director, Benjamin Caron, is associated with a particular season in New York. Each thematically plays into what is being established and what is bound to happen. Highlighting specific spots within the city meant a lot to Julianne Moore, as she has lived in New York City and is familiar with it. Watch the interview to find out more from the cast about what it was like to film in the Big Apple and what it meant to them to film with each other, especially in this specific genre.
“No one is who they seem in “Sharper,” a neo-noir thriller of secrets and lies, set amongst New York City’s bedrooms, barrooms and boardrooms. Characters compete for riches and power in a high stakes game of ambition, greed, lust and jealousy that will keep audiences guessing until the final moment.”
The film will premiere in select theaters on Friday, February 10 and globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, February 17, 2023.
