I Gotta say I was waiting for this one.
Like millions of bloodthirsty youths, I grew up worshipping the Mortal Kombat franchise and fully lost myself when the sensational trailer for this movie dropped. They really set us up for something big, and faced tons of pressure to make something better than the much-hated 90s ‘Mortal Kombat.’ Plot twist: I actually like that one.
This reboot was pitch-perfect baby. It strikes a sensational balance between reverence for the source material and new, exciting ideas. There are plenty of long, intense battles mix hand to hand fighting with stellar CGI to create sequences that are both grounded and breathtaking.
The acting in this is also pretty damn good, most notably between Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and Kano (Josh Lawson). Their rapport and the intense ‘do I want to sleep with you or kill you’ energy they have is delightful.
They also, get this, have great chemistry IRL, and had been friends for years before being cast opposite each other. That was just one tidbit in a pretty freakin fun interview with those two. Had a great chat with Simon as well, who broke down his method of keeping the performances human in a supernatural setting.
‘It’s a matter of staying with the characters and not getting really wild and all over the place,’ he explained. ‘Just keeping all that very uncomplicated.’
However, he and the crew did it, they pulled off a great feat. People are gonna love this movie. I am people.
