With her new film Uncle Drew hitting theaters June 29, actress Erica Ash sat down with us to give an insider look into all things Erica Ash and Uncle Drew.

Lionsgate
The Knockturnal: What was the best part of working with your cast?
Erica Ash: I think just the stories and being kind of a fly on the wall, as they all shared the camaraderie of having life long careers in the NBA, most of them. And then Seeing how they related with each other and with the newbies, and they were people like Nate Robinson and Kyrie Irving.
The Knockturnal: As a comedian in Uncle Drew, who do you think played the funniest character?
Erica Ash: Oh wow! That’s a tough one because, you know I think the athletes really really stepped up, and I think the funniest person on set was probably Shaq. He’s a big goofball, I think its because you would least expect it from him because he’s just so towering and massive when you see him, you don’t expect him to be, you know, as silly. He’s like the overgrown dog that still thinks it’s a puppy.
The Knockturnal: What did you like best about playing Maya in the movie?
Erica Ash: I just loved the fact that she was kind of a grounding source in the movie, and she didn’t have to compete with all the different funny, which was a break from the norm for me. Because funny is funny is normally my default, and getting a chance to play the grounding character is nice for a change.
The Knockturnal: In the movie, your character Maya was sweet but we saw her show a sassier side. Which side do you think is more you?
Erica Ash: I’m somewhere in the middle, and I think both sides are absolutely necessary. Yeah, I’ve got a nice bite when I need to have it, but I try to at least start off on the sweet foot.
The Knockturnal: The old school dream team surprised everyone by still having amazing basketball skills, what is something surprising that audiences don’t know about you?
Erica Ash: Oh wow! That’s a good question. Something surprising that audiences don’t know about me? Gosh. I feel like I’ve said everything in interviews over the years because I’m pretty much an open book. Well audiences don’t know who I’m dating, and I usually keep it like that. That’s the one thing that audiences don’t know and usually won’t know. You wont see me on carpets with people I’m dating, I really don’t make that very public. So that’s something they don’t know, and we’ll keep it like that.
The Knockturnal: If there is an Uncle Drew 2, what do you think the future of Maya and Dax’s relationship would be?
Erica Ash: Well I think that Dax won Maya’s heart by just being just a sweet lovable person. I think that they grew through a friendship and kind of found their attraction at the end, so I definitely think that you’ll see them together. Maybe there will be a family, a little Dax or Maya running around, and they have a lot of uncles and grandpappies to keep them company and to babysit. They will certainly be great athletes, they’ve got some big role models if we go that route.
The Knockturnal: Any upcoming projects you want to share?
Erica Ash: I do! I’ve got a new movie coming out, its called Singleholic, and I star and executive produced that film. And stay tuned to my Instagram, I’m just crossing fingers for a season two of my television show that I star in, which is call In Contempt. And then stay tuned to social media for more.
