The Knockturnal: Your album ‘Melody’ is coming out on October 22nd. What can fans expect to hear? What do you hope they will take away from it?
Demarco: Fans can expect to hear all the great music I have previously not been able to release. The takeaway is the versatility of my sound and how my production abilities help bring together the unique elements of each track.
The Knockturnal: How long did it take you to create the songs on the album ‘Melody’? Which song(s) are you most excited for fans to listen to?
Demarco: Creating the actual songs didn’t take long, and it was the matter of releasing them that took over a decade. There are so many good songs on the album it’s hard to pick just one. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great artists over the years, too, so it’s extraordinary to include feature tracks with talents such as Spice, Sean Paul, Beenie Man, and Bounty Killer. The song with Stephen Marley is different from what I usually do, and I think people will dig the track featuring Ky-Mani Marley.
The Knockturnal: While creating your single ‘Ryda’ what was your inspiration?
Demarco: It’s about loyalty and showing appreciation for that. It’s a play on the term “Ride or Die,” showing the glamour and the grit of those relationships in any scenario, particularly in terms of romantic partnerships.
The Knockturnal: The music videos connected to your songs consistently tell a story, which adds an added element to your music. How do you create the concepts behind your videos?
Demarco: Now that I’m also directing my visuals, I feel inspired to tap into the storytelling component of capturing scenes and producing them in a meaningful way. I was very pleased with how the” Ryda” music video came together, and it debuted in September and already has almost 2 million views.
The Knockturnal: You’ve written songs for multiple well known artists such as Rihanna and Bounty Killer. Can you describe your songwriting process?
Demarco: I like to get to work right away. When I focus and begin on a new project, it usually goes pretty fast because it all comes to me and flows through me as I pull out parts that make sense for the situation at hand or the particular talent I’m working with. It is a balance to keep the song’s integrity while tweaking to compliment the person’s vocals.
The Knockturnal: If you could collaborate with any artist(s) in the industry who would it be?
Demarco: I always say Rihanna, and even though I’ve touched some things she’s been working on, working with her one-on-one would be pure magic in the professional sense.
