We sat down with Crash Overcast, to talk about their experience opening for The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus on November 10th at Whisky a Go Go.

For some context, the Rock genre covers a very wide range of music. Some people consider Lionel Richie rock, some consider Green Day classic rock, and some even swear Black Sabbath is heavy metal. But today we’re gonna dive into the underground punk scene to see how the genre’s been doing since 2006.

In West Hollywood, there’s a few clubs that still rip the punk rock scene, one of those being Whisky a Go Go on Sunset Blvd. Anyone’s been to Whisky knows they’re in for a performance whether or not the audience even wants it, and you’re goddamn right the band knows it too. The thing about punk rock is a lot of the times, the bands are playing for themselves, not for the crowd. So whether or not the crowd is into it, you’re gonna get the same energy on stage — loud, and forceful.

A few days before the concert, I went through the list of openers to see how early I should show up to the show. After sifting through the numerous openers, I stumbled upom Crash Overcast — and after hearing one of their singles on Spotify, I knew I wanted to hear more songs like this. Luckily, they had a full album released:

I decided to actually listen to the music and try to understand where they were coming from because to be honest, a lot of the lyrics felt not only relatable, but the writing kept the punk rock “fuck you” attitude while still respecting the musical structure.

When I showed up at the Whiskey, I immediately hit the merch table, grabbed their debut EP and T-Shirt, and waited to see if their performance could hold up to the recordings they did on the album. When they eventually did, I immediately felt relieved — they knew the mission (they knew what they had to do), using their comfort to their advantage and giving the audience a performance whether they wanted it or not. And by the end, they definitely wanted more.

Crash Overcast has an EP releasing soon with Paul Miner (Death by Stereo, New Found Glory), and includes a much wider range of rock including but not limited to: pop punk, post-hardcore, metalcore, and progressive metal.

Last Sunday we sat down with the four rock stars to find out a little bit about Crash Overdrive and what they’re all about. Some basic information: Crash Overcast was created in 2015. The band includes four members: J.D. Harris (Bass/Vocals), Jeff Shroeder (Drums), Alex Kurnow (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar), and Edwin Woodside (Lead Guitar). Some of their favorite movies include Beetlejuice and Jurassic Park. Their merch can be found here. Check out the exclusive interview below!
