With the end of the iconic ABC show Black-ish this week, it concludes its run as one of the most successful and impactful shows to ever grace the airwaves.
The show is wrapping up with four Emmy nominations, four NAACP awards, and a Peabody award, thanks to a cast that has essentially grown up on the show and a writer’s room that has continued to grow and expand as the show has gone on. As the show has gained popularity as years have gone on, an entire universe has been constructed. Spinoffs such as Grown-ish starring Yara Shahidi, and Mixed-ish have all proven to be great successes as well.
We spoke with Courtney Lilly, who has been in the writer’s room since the first season of Black-ish aired and was recently promoted to showrunner in Season 6, about the show’s incredible run, growing up on set with Myles Brown and Marsai Martin, his time on shows like The Cleveland Show and Arrested Development, some ideas that never made it to screen, and his new position as co-showrunner for the fifth season of Grown-ish, which will air soon on Freeform!
Watch the interview here and tune into the series finale of Black-ish airing on ABC on April 19th!
