How did you first discover DJ Pebbles? What’s the story?
Randy Jackson: We met, we were on a boat. No, I’m just kidding.
DJ Pebbles: I wish it was like that. I wish I was on a boat.
Randy Jackson: I’m always scrounging, looking for artists. Trying to find new artists. Someone brought Cartier to our attention and I was like “Wow. She’s talented. She’s cool. She’s an Aussie girl from Brisbane” and we’ve been working together, about a year, maybe a year and a half.
DJ Pebbles: Yeah, about a year and half now.
Randy Jackson: Launching the second single now.
DJ Pebbles: Yeah, we launch the second single tomorrow, which is really exciting and we’ve been trying to find the right song for a while and it launches tomorrow. So we’re really excited about it. (Listen here)
Randy Jackson: So she’s a singer and a DJ and she’s enrolled in Tisch.
It’s a fantastic school, right?
DJ Pebbles: Yeah it’s a busy schedule.
Tell me a little bit about the rise of the DJ. The DJ is so powerful these days. Can you speak a little bit about that?
Randy Jackson: Yeah I think the DJs come up over the last 10 or 15 years but I think they’ve always been around forever, especially if you think about New York and you think about Frankie Knuckles and all of the great DJs. I mean it started here in New York and in Europe but I think the girl DJs have really come up. So I think that’s a whole, new different thing, because you know, first of all it’s equality and if you’re talented, you’re talented, whether you’re a guy or a girl. And I think you got a different perspective.
DJ Pebbles: Absolutely. And it’s like a secret weapon almost. Yeah I find it like a secret weapon, if you can sing, there’s a lot of singers. But if you can DJ, you have so much creative freedom to change your music, collaborate with people.
Randy Jackson: And then if you can do both, you’re like DJ Pebbles! Ah ha.
And what has it been like to have such a legend as your mentor?
DJ Pebbles: It has been really, really, unreal, I was so lucky to meet Randy a year and a half ago and he’s so involved with all my creative choices and is a really great mentor and guide to my future!
Randy Jackson: I don’t know about legend, just a kind man.
DJ Pebbles: No, I think a legend. I do.
