Season two of Mixed-ish just premiered this year, bringing together TV’s most iconic family.
Arica Himmel stars as a young “Rainbow” coming of age in a biracial household in the 70’s. She explains she has a lot in common with her character.
“She tends to be very curious, I also tend to be very curious. She loves to learn, I love to learn,” she says, “I think she tries a little hard sometimes even when she has good intentions. I try to be more chill. I’m able to figure things out more, but also it might be because she’s from the commune and I’m just a regular girl so it might be that.”
Behind the scenes the cast is tightly knit, constantly joking around on set. “We’re always making Tik Tok’s, we’re always dancing, we do some improv games with our dialogue coach. We have a lot of fun.” Rainbow first came to life on the small screen as an adult in the award-winning series “Blackish” with actress Tracee Ellis-Ross. Young Rainbow and adult rainbow worked together to develop the character and they still keep in touch off set. “I’m able to talk to Tracee more, catch up on hair things. Because, you know, it’s all about the hair!”
As the show continues to develop, it’s sure to give audiences a diverse worldview, as representation today is key. “I think it’s great for people to see themselves on TV, I think it’s great for people to see themselves everywhere.”
