The comedic duo, Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle have brought the outrageously hilarious comedy show, South Side back for season two.
To refresh your memories, South Side follows adventure capitalists Simon [Sultan Salahuddin] and Kareme [Kareme Young] on their journey to take over the world. Unfortunately, that journey is a slow one and the pair settle for working at Rent-T-Own with a bunch of characters for coworkers. Shot on location in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, the show takes on a refreshingly authentic look into what life on the South Side is really like. Season two which premiered for the first time on HBO Max on November 11, has delivered the same mix of sharp humor, subtle gems, and striking cultural commentary that fans have come to love. The show launched with three episodes with the next three debuting on November 18 and the final four episodes launching on November 25.
Writing partners and stars in the show, Riddle and Salahuddin have received quite the reception for both South Side and their critically acclaimed IFC series, Sherman’s Showcase. Now with South Side moving from Comedy Central to HBO Max, did the dynamic duo decide to kick it up a notch for viewers? “I think the great thing about being on HBO Max is that we don’t have the same limitations on time. So, what we can actually and authentically say is, that season two is actually bigger and more of what you got in season one,” Salahuddin explains. One thing that is certain, there are a plethora of characters this season that can easily become your favorite. Each episode introduces new faces and brings back some old minor characters from season one that stole the show with just one or two lines. You might even spot some of your celebrity favorites including Chance the Rapper, Dreezy, and Vic Mensa.
It is clear that genuine love for the city of Chicago and the series itself has made this show an infectious, comical love letter to Chicago and it’s residents. “Anytime you get to make something you love I think that’s rare,” says Salahuddin. And although the show just recently premiered, it is safe to say that fans are reciprocating the love.
