In “Zoe,” two colleagues at a revolutionary research lab design technology to improve and perfect romantic relationships. As their work progresses, their discoveries become more profound.

We spoke with writer/director Drake Doremus at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the film.

The Knockturnal: Tell me about getting Ridley Scott to be a producer. What was that like?

Drake Doremus: Yeah, it was awesome! I mean, he’s so smart and his team is so smart, so it’s just awesome in the genre to participate in that circle.

The Knockturnal: How did the script come to you?

Drake Doremus: I developed it with Rich. We were just throwing around ideas and things, and we were just thinking about different ways to look at love, and different prisms to look at it, and it kind of just made sense.

The Knockturnal: And how is collaborating with Lea?

Drake Doremus: She’s great! She’s amazing. Really special. I’m really proud of her performance and everybody’s performance in the film.

The Knockturnal: How was working with the rest of the cast?

Drake Doremus: It was really special. I mean, they’re both wonderful human beings and wonderful actors. It’s a dream come true to work with them, so it’s just the idea of pairing them together that was so exciting to me, so, you know, the working process was amazing because they wanted to push it and make sure that we made the best movie we could make. So they were both amazing.

The Knockturnal: Were there any challenges to making the movie?

Drake Doremus: I mean, making any movie’s really challenging. But you know, this movie was difficult because we had a bigger concept, bigger idea, and we only had thirty days to do it in, so you know, we were running around and every once in a while picking up things, re-shooting things, so. They were both great about that.

The Knockturnal: How is it to be returning to the festival?

Drake Doremus: Oh, it’s cool to come back! Yeah, it’s awesome. I mean, being here before, it was a really special energy. I mean, you can’t top New York. New York has a very specific energy that you don’t have anywhere else in the world, so it’s obviously very exciting.

After the BMCC screening Ewan McGregor, Clara McGregor, Matthew Gray, and Drake Doremus celebrated the 2018 Tribeca Film premiere of Zoe at the official after-party on Saturday, April 21st, hosted by Nutella at The Ainsworth FiDi.
