Donald Glover’s ‘Pharos’ and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Two days ago, Donald Glover, also known by his stage name Childish Gambino, tweeted a link to an app called PHAROS Earth.

It showcased a moving visual of a star-streaked universe with a clear end point in sight, and an ominous countdown located at the bottom of the screen. Gambino fans and hackers were reeling with the possibilities behind the meaning of the app, especially given that the musician/actor/writer rarely makes an appearance on social media. Some theories were far fetched, drawing conclusions from allusions to his former television show Community and its reference to six seasons and a movie, whereas others were more straightforward with their guesses, concluding that it was probably a countdown to the release of a new album.

Either way, Glover certainly generated hype for whatever he had in store, and just yesterday the suspense came to an end: Donald Glover is, in fact, planning on releasing a new album titled Pharos in September, and to kick off the debut of said album, he plans to have a three-day live performance in the Joshua Tree National Park located in California.

News of his imminent album was highly unexpected, as Donald Glover has been wrapped up in a couple other major projects that one would think would keep him busy, such as his own upcoming show Atlanta, set to release sometime this summer, and his confirmed role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, scheduled to begin filming next year.

Before his Pharos news, Glover’s ambiguous role in Spider-Man: Homecoming was the main topic in question regarding the versatile celebrity, mainly because he had past history expressing interest in playing the famous Peter Parker in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot, six years ago. His Twitter campaign #Donald4Spiderman became a top three grossing topic, and it also caused a great deal of controversy, mainly because some individuals did not agree with the idea of a Black Spider-Man. Now, more than half a decade later, he is finally joining the cast of a Spidey movie, only it would seem that his dream of becoming the actual Spider-Man himself will still remain elusive.
