Mod Sun & Friends wowed the crowd at Gramercy Theatre for the Drive In Movie Tour NYC stop.
On April 19, 2017, Mod Sun made his way to New York City to perform songs off of his latest project, Movie, at the Gramercy Theatre. “WOKE UP IN NEW YORK CITY (city emoji) so excited for my show tonight at @gramercytheatre // we got tickets at the door so please make last minute plans + bring some friends out. I absolutely promise you will enjoy the celebration + love the movie :)” is what the rapper posted on his Instagram account just a few hours before his NYC performance. Upon arrival, the room was filled with young people super excited to see all the performances, wearing some of their Mod Sun merchandise.
The setting was very intimate and everyone was all crowded up by the stage having a good time. There were a lot of people in the crowd, even someone dressed up as a panda – yes, a panda. The show started with Kurt Rockmore, who had everyone pumped up and ready for the next acts – Benny Freestyles and the New Hippys. The crowd vibed along to all the songs, and the performers were super excited that the crowd was having a good time, especially the New Hippys who claimed that it was the best show on the tour so far.
After some time, DJ Kam Bennett came onto the stage, spinning some songs that everyone in the crowd was singling along to. The room was filled with red lighting and everyone was snapchatting the experience with excitement. Swag Hollywood came onto the stage and filled the room with his fun energetic rap. He performed his song Lil Gangsta’ that featured Lil Yachty and some of the people in the crowd knew the song word for word.
Marty Grimes, a California native, showed up excited to perform to the New York City crowd. Many of the fans cheered uncontrollably and sang along very loudly to all his songs. During his performance, I got the chance to chat with the New Hippys and Swag Hollywood and grab some pictures of them. By the time I entered the main stage room, Marty was having a great time with the crowd, bringing a pizza onto stage and giving some out to people in the very front row.
After Marty exited stage, the venue got dark and Mod Sun’s set was being prepared. His couch, that looks like the rear end of a car was center stage and his visuals were loaded onto the projector. He then came into the stage and started singing his hit track ‘We Do This Sh*t’ with psychedelic visuals playing in the background. He greeted all of his New York City ‘Hippies’ and expressed his gratitude to be able to play the venue that night. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, New York City, this is a f*****g night I will not forget. Are you good?” is what he said as he got ready to perform the next song. The crowd yelled back and Mod Sun continued to play songs off his latest album, Movie. The energy in the venue was amazing and all in all everyone was having a great time.
