Concert Review: ALMA at Baby’s All Right

This week, ALMA slayed her first live-performance in Brooklyn.

Whether you’re looking for your next pop-girl powerhouse or some fresh music for your pre-game playlist, ALMA is your new favorite artist. On Wednesday, the dance-pop singer-songwriter from Finland delivered a stunning performance at the Brooklyn venue, Baby’s All Right. Donning a white bomber-jacket and neon hair that glowed under UV lighting – matching her twin sister and back-up singer’s shorter tresses – ALMA commanded the stage with sparkle and verve.

The show began with a robotic countdown as the members of ALMA’s band moved on-stage. The percussion and guitar slowly built as vocals began off-stage for the artist’s hit song, “Karma.” The crowd waited with phones raised, thumbs hovering over the record button in anticipation. Yet, once the vocalists appeared on-stage, everyone pocketed their devices and danced. ALMA’s infectious rhythms – striking a chord between the genres of deep-house and mainstream pop – have this effect. It’s no longer a choice between whether or not you want to dance – you simply must.

During her set, ALMA delivered one banger after another featuring her original tracks and some covers. The artist’s rendition of “No Scrubs” by TLC earned howls of approval from the audience but it was her own track, “Dye My Hair,” that proved to be the show-stopper. The artist let loose on-stage as the audience sang along with the song’s catchy chorus. Following the track, a breathless and grateful ALMA called out to the crowd.

“I love you guys! This is unbelievable…how many years ago [did] a Finnish person [have] a gig in New York? This is a special moment for me.”

ALMA seems set for success. The 21-year-old artist signed to Universal Music just last year and her rise to stardom seems rapid and relentless since that moment. As ALMA waved goodbye to a crowd of both devoted and new fans in Brooklyn, the future seemed full of possibilities for the artist. Watch the charts. Watch the festival line-ups. Watch this space.

ALMA’s music is available to stream on Spotify. Stay connected via the artist’s website.
