The Knockturnal: Hello!
Captain Sandy Yawn: Hello, I’m eating Chips Ahoy cookies so life is really good.
The Knockturnal: That’s great. Can you tell me about your career?
Captain Sandy Yawn: Well, I fell into boating by watching boats. A guy offered me a full-time job. Next thing you know, he’s sending me to sea school and teaching me how to drive a boat. I just happened to fall into this maritime industry. So, it’s been an awesome career. It’s escalated to the point where I’m on a TV show.
I didn’t seek the TV show. I love the maritime industry. It’s a great industry to work in.
The Knockturnal: Okay. So, what is the TV show about?
Captain Sandy Yawn: I’m on a show called Below Deck Mediterranean. It chronicles the lives of yacht crews who live and work on board a superyacht during the charter season. They highlight the ups and downs, including the great and not-so-great weather. It’s a travel show with a lot of great components.
The Knockturnal: Do you have any favorite places that you’ve traveled to?
Captain Sandy Yawn: You know, the boat is the destination, to be honest. The boat is the destination. When you anchor off of places like the South of France or the Amalfi Coast, it’s all spectacular because it’s all about the view. Even if you’re sitting in New Jersey looking at Manhattan, it’s like ‘Holy…wow! It’s incredible!’ Wherever you are– the Hamptons, New England, it’s all beautiful. Remember that you’re dropping an anchor and you’re looking ashore. The view is incredible.
The Knockturnal: Okay! Can you talk about your involvement with Chips Ahoy?
Captain Sandy Yawn: Chips Ahoy? I grew up with Chips Ahoy! They were a staple item in my house. I love the cookie. I used to count how many chocolate chips were in my cookie compared to my siblings. We would have a competition: ‘Whose cookie wouldn’t break apart before you could put it in your mouth?’
It’s a visceral experience, as much as it is flavor and taste. It is a culture, a Chips Ahoy culture! I love Chips Ahoy.
The Knockturnal: That’s great!
Captain Sandy Yawn: And I’m not saying that because I’m here today. I’m saying that because I really mean it. I love their cookies. Anyone in my family will tell you that I am a cookie person.
The Knockturnal: How does boating connect with Chips Ahoy?
Captain Sandy Yawn: You have to have your favorite snacks when you go away. I remember when I went to the Mediterranean for the first time, I was looking for cookies and cereal. Those are two things I love. When I walked into the super-mall grocery store, all they had was yogurt. I went to the cookie aisle and saw cookies I never saw in my life. I was like ‘Where is the Chips Ahoy?” I just wanted something that was familiar.
The cereal was very lacking. The one thing that Europeans do is eat very well. So, I went with the yogurt.
The Knockturnal: Okay, that makes sense. Can you talk about what you specifically do in your role with Chips Ahoy?
Captain Sandy Yawn: My specific function with Chips Ahoy is to eat the cookie. I make sure that the crispness doesn’t go away when I dunk it in milk. So, I don’t really have a role other than to enjoy something that is so great, which they made sixty years ago and two years before I was born.
I feel like the cookie was perfected by the time I was born. By the time I grew up, I had this staple item in my house.
The Knockturnal: That’s so interesting. What future plans do you have with Chips Ahoy?
Captain Sandy Yawn: Chips Ahoy is a big part of my life. So, future plans with Chips Ahoy? Hmm…maybe they come below deck with me!
They’re already there, to be honest. Like, they’re on the boat. So, every time I go away, even below deck, we have Chips Ahoy. It’s all part of it.
The Knockturnal: Okay, great. Do you have any future boat trips planned?
Captain Sandy Yawn: Future boat trips? Well, tonight, I’m going on a boat with Chips Ahoy. In two weeks, I’ll be going on another boat to Clearwater, Florida. I’m a boater, so boats are just a part of my life. I’m on a boat every chance I can get.
The Knockturnal: Okay. It was great to talk to you today.
Captain Sandy Yawn: You too; thank you!
