Channeling 70s Summer Ease: Behind Jonathan Simkhai’s Romantic S/S 25 ‘Tousled Tresses

Technically, Jonathan Simkhai’s S/S 25 looks debuted last month, during September’s NYFW.

More particularly, the collection unfolded right before summer’s end, on one of the final long, warm days spared by this year. Most particularly, however, it coincided with the anniversary of Simkhai’s mother’s wedding day—September 7th, 1972—when the seed of the work sprouted. The idea all began with a silk flower petal once attached to her wedding dress found by Simkhai. The themes of petals, play, and the passing of time remain vivid in our memories of the collection, embodied from the pieces themselves down to the “Tousled Tresses” complementing their romantic nature.

“This season we are focused on hair that embodies summer ease and the volume mousse products have made achieving the look effortless.” – Jonathan Simkhai

Although the loose, airy, and textured waves themselves evoke an effortlessness, we went backstage with Tresemme and lead hairstylist Holli Smith to demystify the technicals of the beauty team’s deliberate efforts/tousles.

“Leaning into 70’s archetypes, we went for an untouched Brigitte Bardot vibe to get an effortless style, and the TRESemmé Extra Hold Mousse was key to highlighting the texture in the hair.” – Celebrity Stylist, Holli Smith.

Reminiscent of the free-spirited milieu of the 70s, an imperfect and nonchalant appearance is created using Tresemme Extra Hold Mousse. Clips are placed in the hair to create delicate waves that further translate the texture of the lace pieces in the collection. Evading the crunch that is characteristic of most mice, the waves maintain their dynamism, akin to flowers and/or silk flowing in the summer breeze.

Even as the days progressively become shorter and colder, adopting the tousled tresses allows us to reimagine and embody that sense of summer ease no matter the season. If you want to speak technically:

Tousled Tresses

Key Products Used:
  • TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Weightless Heat Protection Spray
  • TRESemmé Extra Hold Mousse
  • TRESemmé Extra Hold Hairspray
  • Shark Beauty SpeedStyle ProFlex
The Breakdown:
  1. Start by sectioning the hair into a natural middle part and apply the TRESemmé Extra Hold Mousse directly into the hair.
  2. Go in with additional TRESemmé Extra Hold Mousse along the middle part and structure with single-pronged clips to obtain volume.
  3. Using a flat brush, position the front pieces forward and tuck them behind the ear to frame the face. Clip to maintain shape.
  4. Use the Shark Beauty SpeedStyle ProFlex on a gentle heat with the DeFrizzFast diffuser about 6 inches from the head to create hold without crunch, and maintain the shape.
  5. Once dry, use your hands to break up sections of hair.

Finish with TRESemmé Extra Hold Hairspray to set the look. For a more wet look, spray hair with TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Weightless Heat Protection Spray to add moisture.
