Chance The Rapper has announced a new initiative with a benefactor partnership.
It’s always endearing to watch emcees give back to their city, especially when they carry it through their music. Chance came out and said he would be making his next move in partnership with the Warmest Winter Campaign, aiming to raise 100k to provide coats for the homeless. Speaking positively, it’s a great gesture and a strong action based response to Spike Lee’s accusations that Chance’s relationship to Chicago is unhealthy with his dad working for the corrupt mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Regardless of the intent, if successful a number of Chicagoans will be able to stay a little warmer this winter. It’s also important to note the coats that are going to be bought through this drive double as sleeping bags.
It’s actions like this or Torae handing out Thanksgiving dinners to poor families that exemplify that strength of community Hip Hop was built around. Furthering that spirit of community, you can also donate to the Warmest Winter Chicago Foundation through here.
The goal set as of now is to give out 1,000 EMPWR coats to homeless Chicagoans by the end of the program. If you think about donating to this organization also consider your own community as there certainly are similar programs that lack a celebrity endorsement to make headlines.
