I wasn’t necessarily excited when I saw CeeLo had a new track up but I’d be lying if I said my head wasn’t swinging along to the beat.
It’s crazy to think how many people don’t really understand how much of an OG CeeLo is. From Goodie Mob to Outkast to crafting the rap and singing gumbo that Drake popularized, CeeLo has been present from the foundation of the genre. He is and has always been much more than his hit “Forget You”
This track leans much heavier on the singing side of things but that’s certainly not a fault. In summary it’s a soulful and heartwarming ballad that brings out the best in CeeLo. Although it isn’t present on the album’s tracklist I hope there’s a hidden Andre or Big Boi feature cooked in somewhere. While the track is certainly soul inspired, I really want to hear him on something a little more funky. I need another “Evening News” and with how talented CeeLo is I can definitely see that happening.
What first attracted me to CeeLo was how easily he bent genre lines and that’s something I really hope he doesn’t fully retract. You can check out the song on youtube here.
