On the 4th day of December, SZA gave to me, a secret album starring Kenny. Two weeks ago the Grammy-nominated singer quietly dropped a 9-song project under the alias ‘Sister Solana.’ The album, ‘Comethru,’ is a moodier SZA, a pastoral rendering of her soul-baring style.
There aren’t a ton of production details, obviously, but Kendrick makes two appearances as King Kenny. As of now there are fewer than a thousand plays on each track, but I can confirm they go, and also, slap. ‘Loved Ones’ is a highlight, a horn-soaked, gospel r&b classic built for barbecues or funky seances.
‘Back Together’ is a stripped-groove heater, SZA’s vocals distant and yearning. It’s sparse and entrancing, like a Chinatown lounge where you’re the first person to walk in.
It’s unclear what’s new and what’s older material, what’s reworked and what’s a bedroom entry sent straight to the masses, but I don’t actually care. Shit sounds good, great even, and I hope people start streaming it immediately, for their own good.
