We headed back stage at the 5:31 Jerome Show to pick up on fall’s trends.
Nails: Rose Velez, Door Bella
What was the inspiration behind this look?
We wanted to do something that incorporated a galaxy of colors, that’s where we got the rainbow of colors on the underside. The polish we used on the top features holographic glitter in it, which almost looks like the sky at night. We wanted to personalize a bit, so we used a customized minx nail on the thumb with Jerome’s hashtag #JREAMSTATE.
How can readers replicate this look at home?
The nail polish I used is by Dermelect, which is available at Ulta and online. We used a total of six colors all together. It’s actually a really easy look to replicate on the front side and if your nails are long, you can do the underside as well. The underside of the nails consists of five colors.
What are some nail trends you see coming up for this season?
Bold colors. We’re working on fall so everything tends to be in darker shades. I’m also seeing a lot of frosts, they’re making a come back.
What are some of your favorite tools?
I don’t think I use any specific tools. But the best way to a perfect manicure is good nail prep. Dermelect is perfect because they offer nail treatments, which keep your nails healthy and the skin around the nails healthy. If your hands are healthy, your manicure will last forever.
How was it like working with Jerome?
He was a joy to work with. He’s so creative; it was a lot of fun.

“Essentially with the makeup, we’re trying to tell the story of a luxurious, urban doll. So there’s a 1960 bombshell quality, we wanted to incorporate eyelashes, but also keep the makeup a little bit more street and modern. I didn’t want the makeup to be so referential. We actually are doing both top and bottom lashes, but we are doing it with hues and textures that a are a bit more modern. So it looks like the girl who has the cool New York street skin; she doesn’t look overly fussed with or overly pretty. I’m creating a smoky eye with violet pigment and steel blue pigment from MAC. We pre-mixed them and slide it across the eye lid, so that it creates a purple-blue mesmeric smoky eye, which is really in line with Jerome’s collection this season. For the cheeks and the lips, we used the MAC trend pallet from fall/winter 2016. We’re mixing the dusty lavender, cranberry, and raspberry shades together on one of MAC’s Pro Performance Sponges. We’re then taping it into the skin and letting it mix with the foundation and moisturizer; so it really looks like it’s a part of her skin, avoiding the topical make-upy look. We did the same thing on the lips. The idea is that she did it herself. She’s going to be wearing this gorgeous gown thats super luxurious and adorned and she’s going to go party. It’s a very fresh, young look, even though there are a lot of grown up qualities to the gowns. We wanted to keep the makeup and hair very light, fresh, and modern. The look has a little bit of the sixty’s flair but with today’s touch.”

What was the inspiration behind the look?
When it comes to New York City Fashion Week, it always begins with the designer and respecting the designer and his mood. So we met about a week ago with Jerome. I sat down and talked to him about who’s this woman he’s designing for this season. He described the collection to me and described a woman who’s wearing something very fun and playful. He kept using the phrase “More is more”. I haven’t actually gotten the chance to see the collection but I am assuming it’s going to be a lot going on. I was debating what that meant for the hair. If you’re going to say, “More is more,” you’re going to have big, voluminous hairstyles. We took Bridget Bardot as our inspiration. All of the models with the longer hair have the signature fullness at the crown, which Bridget Bardot always did. We curled the underneath very loosely so it has a more modern feel and is not overly coifed. We have the retro throwback in terms of the fullness but then the ends get softer which keep it modern.
What products are you using today?
As appropriate, I am the Creative Director for L’ANZA Haircare, so we’re using all L’ANZA Haircare. The key product that’s really helping us get the look today is the L’ANZA Healing Style Powder Up Texturizer. It’s a texturizer powder that has a lot of hold to it . It has a salt shaker applicator and you can tip it over and it gives the hair a lot of grip and hold. Today we’re just squeezing it and fluffing it into the hair into the roots, tight where we want the most volume. Put that in and back comb the hair and you get tons of volume and lift. The L’ANZA Keratin Healing Oil Lustrous Finishing Spray holds the curls in place along with adding shine.
How can readers re-create this look at home?
It’s really about getting the right products. My recommendation would be picking up the Powder Up Texturizer and using it in the base and then using a fine toothcomb to lock it in place. Then follow it up with a curling iron to get the curls for this look.
What are some of your favorite styling tools?
Curling irons, brushes. We always use Marcel curling irons. I would recommend that customers go into salons and sit with their stylists and talk to them about the styling tools they use at home. Nine times out of ten women think that their blow drier is good but if they run and take it to their stylist, the stylist would be able to tell them whether or not the tool can do the job they want it to do.
