When D.J. Kool Herc and his sister Cindy decided to throw a party for the young people from their neighborhood in the Community Room at 1520 Sedgewick Ave., little did they know that it would be the spark for a global movement in music. They only wanted a safe place where kids could go party and not have to worry about getting chased out of the parks by cops or random gunfire.
Having grown up in the Greater Jamaica Queens, NY area only half a mile or so from LL Cool J on the
infamous Farmers Blvd., this writer has been keenly aware of LL’s career from early on.
Walmart continues to build momentum in 2023 as the co-presenting sponsor of LL Cool Jay’s Rock The Bells (RTB) festival in Queens, NY – taking place Saturday, August 5th, 2023.
But CurlFest was more than just about the hair; it curated incredible activations and featured inspiring panelists that left us feeling empowered and motivated. Engaging discussions, thought-provoking conversations, and a profound sense of community warmed our hearts. These sessions imparted valuable knowledge and perspectives, emphasizing the strength of unity in celebrating our natural beauty.
Let’s not overlook the main stage–the DJs had the entire park on its toes with their incredible mixes and infectious beats. The vibes were unreal, prompting us to dance our hearts out. The music amplified the energy, keeping the party alive all day.
CurlFest went above and beyond expectations this year, and we were thrilled to be part of such a phenomenal event. It truly highlighted the beauty, creativity, and diversity within the natural hair community. Anticipation is already building for next year’s CurlFest, and we can’t wait for the incredible moments it will undoubtedly bring!

The Flash has been a staple in DC comics since the 1940s, and has continued to be a fan favorite for decades. However, in this last installment of the now defunct DCEU, Warner Bros. took a huge chance and gave The Flash a stand alone film. The story was a mixture of The Flashpoint Paradox with a little bit of Crisis on Infinite Earths and it worked really well.
