Brooklyn Horror Film Festival Makes For a Scary Good Time

by Samantha Bergeson October 26, 2021
written by Samantha Bergeson

The sixth annual Brooklyn Horror Film Festival brought the boogeyman to the beloved borough.

With events at fan favorite venues Williamsburg Cinema, Stuart Cinema, and the newly-reopened Nitehawk Cinema, BHFF offered something for everyone. From the sold-out closing night East Coast premiere of The Sadness to the 35mm screening of Session 9 in honor of its 20th anniversary, BHFF truly outdid itself in its first year back in theaters since the pandemic.

See our favorite festival moments below!

The Last Thing Mary Saw is an outstandingly haunting portrayal of a woman in 1843 New York who faces deadly (and supernatural) consequences for her affair with a maid. Stefanie Scott, who also stars in new Peacock series The Girl in the Woods, portrays Mary, who falls in love with Eleanor, played by Isabelle Fuhrman. Rory Culkin stars as a stranger who threatens to disrupt everything. Writer-director Edoardo Vitaletti was present at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival for the U.S. premiere. The film will be distributed by AMC+ and Shudder.

Family drama When I Consume You returned home to Brooklyn, where the film was shot, after premiering at Fantasia Film Festival earlier this year. Siblings Daphne (Libby Ewing) and Wilson Shaw (Evan Dumouchel) tackle their shared childhood traumas while warding off a demon stalker. Director Perry Blackshear told Variety that horror films are specifically designed to be watched in a dark theater: “It feels like when I watch a scary movie in the theater, it’s like going through a kind of timeless ritual where you die, you feel death,” Blackshear stated. “You get to undergo this intense pain and suffering and yet you survive, maybe stronger than when you began. This catharsis is my favorite part of the genre.”

Netflix’s Night Teeth was a crowd-pleaser with a sultry take on sexy vampires who secretly run L.A. We believe it! Debby Ryan and Lucy Fry play two BFFs who take driver Jorge Lendeborg Jr. on a very different type of ride. Megan Fox and Sydney Sweeney have memorable cameos as queen vampires, while Alfie Allen and Alexander Ludwig round out the urban undead underworld. BHFF hosted the world premiere of Night Teeth, now streaming.

The Home Invasion shorts programs featured a slew of standout films, but two especially caught the attention of BFHH audiences: Still Together and Hazel. Christopher Piazza’s Still Together is at once horrifyingly claustrophobic as well as hilarious. A department store window designer falls in love with a Nordic warrior trapped inside a mannequin. The couple try to plan their escape, but will the other employees thwart their happily ever after? A funky score and a bloody kicker prove we are Still thinking about this off-beat take on horror.

Hazel, directed by Jordan Doig, is a memorable portrayal of postpartum depression. New mom Libby struggles to take care of her daughter, Hazel, especially when her husband Pat isn’t supportive. Libby’s downfall into psychosis has a sinister turn, and you have to watch to see how this short film ends. The horror genre is best when its uncovering the real horrific moments of reality, and Hazel does just that.

Exclusive: Fuse/Fuse+’s “The Canvas: Los Angeles” Visually Stuns

by Samantha Bergeson October 6, 2021
written by Samantha Bergeson

“The Canvas: Los Angeles” premieres on Oct. 6, going inside the world of eight self-taught and self-made artisans who are inspired by their local SoCal communities.

From streetwear designer Chris “Spanto” Printup, the visionary behind the City of Champs collection, to L.A. teacher’s strike artist Ernesto Yerena, The Canvas tells the moving stories of Los Angeles residents who are looking to reclaim their community through art.

Plus, the Fuse/Fuse+ docuseries comes from the South Central-born director Calmatic, the auteur behind the Grammy-winning music video for Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” ft. Billy Ray Cyrus.

Each episode focuses on a different artist, ranging from the below:

  • Calmatic, director (South Central)

    • Raised in South Central, Los Angeles, Calmatic is a self-taught filmmaker who discovered his passion for telling stories at a young age. As a director, he strives to humanize others’ unique experiences without infusing them with negative stereotypes. He seeks to stretch the limits of his viewers’ reality while highlighting the beauty in the mundane. His creative curiosity has allowed him to solidify a place for himself in a constantly evolving industry.

  • Ernesto Yerena, mixed-media artist (Boyle Heights)

    • Ernesto Yerena Montejano was born in El Centro, CA, a mid-sized farming town bordering Mexicali, BC, MX. Fueled by his cross-national upbringing, his art practice reflects his observations of the views and interactions between the Mexican communities living on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Yerena shares narratives of his conflicts of identity that he feels are kindred to what many Chicanos of these communities experience.

  • Mark “Peaced” Pangilian, photographer and creative director (East Hollywood/Echo Park/Silverlake)

    • Mark “Peaced” Pangilinan is a photographer born in the Philippines and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Growing up all over Los Angeles – he spent time in East Hollywood, Silverlake, and Echo Park – heavily influenced his career and work. Mark’s photography encompasses fashion, music and documentary storytelling.

  • Guadalupe Rosales, artist and educator (East Los Angeles)

    • Guadalupe Rosales is a multidisciplinary artist and educator best known for her community-generated archival projects, “Veteranas and Rucas” and “Map Pointz.” The projects manifested in 2015 from the under/misrepresentation and historical erasure of Latin@/x communities in Southern California.

  • Chris “Spanto” Printup, brand owner (Venice)

    • Venice native and co-founder of streetwear label, BornxRaised, which launched in 2013 after Spanto was released from a year-long sentence in prison. The brand was literally born and raised from sketches he made on a manila folder he got from the commissary.

  • Joshua Vides, reality to idea artist (Fairfax/Rancho Cucamonga/Rialto)

    • Joshua Vides is a Southern California-based graphic designer, visual artist and a first-generation Guatemalan. Vides was born and raised in Rialto, CA but moved to Los Angeles early in life to pursue his career. His work defines the premise of pop art through immersive illustrations and a range of limited products.

  • Estevan Oriol, photographer (Los Angeles)

    • Estevan Oriol is an American of Mexican-Italian descent and photographer and music video director. His work, which encompasses the essence of Los Angeles, has been featured in magazines and reflects Los Angeles’ urban and gang culture. He’s also photographed many celebrities.

  • Ann-Marie Hoang “MSTR OF DISGUISE,” wardrobe stylist (Gardena / Torrance / Hollywood)

    • Ann-Marie Hoang is a wardrobe stylist and environmental vibe setter, also known as Mstr Of Disguise. Her style influence is on display in music videos including Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” & “Thank You, Next”, Drake “POPSTAR”, and YG “Loko.”

Check out our exclusive clip from the series premiere, with Spanto opening up about why he considers himself a true artist.

“The Canvas: Los Angeles” airs Wednesdays on Fuse.

Travel Abroad With Wes Anderson’s French Connection at FI:AF

by Samantha Bergeson October 5, 2021
written by Samantha Bergeson

Oui, j’adore la cinema française!

Merci pour Wes Anderson, because the auteur’s partnership with the French Institute Alliance Française (FI:AF) has brought some of the greatest French films stateside for a very special curated event. Is there a greater double feature–no, triple feature–than Anderson’s ode to a fictional French town with a François Truffaut classic, followed by a Jacques Becker comedy?

While Anderson could not be in-person for the U.S. premiere of his gorgeously whimsical anthology film “The French Dispatch” at the stunning 59th New York Film Festival, he certainly achieved the goal of placing a beret atop the Big Apple thanks to his “French Connection” collaboration with FI:AF.

From Sept. 14 through Oct. 26, running every Tuesday, FI:AF screens selected films through its CinéSalon, beginning with “Peppermint Soda” and concluding with “Antoine and Antoinette.”

Highlights from the program include Truffaut’s “The Man Who Loved Women,” telling the story of a philandering writer whose final lovers reunite at his funeral, while his female editor retraces the missteps of his heart. “Max and the Junkmen” offers a unique twist on a dark comedy about an aloof Parisian detective who tries to deceive a gang of bank robbers, all while falling for one of the criminal’s girlfriends. Lastly, Becker’s “Antoine and Antoinette” is a magnificent romp of a romantic comedy as a young couple seeks out a misplaced winning lottery ticket.

“French cinema has always been part of Anderson’s artistic heritage and the acclaimed auteur has picked some of his favorite French films to be screened for FI:AF audiences,” the site reads. “The series coincides with the highly anticipated release of Anderson’s star-studded film, ‘The French Dispatch.'”

Calling all cinephiles and francophiles, Anderson’s FI:AF curation certainly should not be missed. And, “The French Dispatch” is a must-see, perfect for a hazy fall Sunday where we can all escape into a European fantasy world of art, passion, and promise.

Exclusive: ‘Best Sellers’ Director Lina Roessler Reveals What She’s Reading Now

by Samantha Bergeson September 24, 2021

The plot of “Best Sellers” sounds like an award-winning novel in itself: A frustrated author (Michael Caine) must reluctantly brave through a book tour to save a boutique publishing house, run by executives played by Aubrey Plaza and Ellen Wong. Put down your book because “Best Sellers” is one of the best films we’ve seen this year.

Exclusive: Why Meganne Young Thinks ‘The Kissing Booth 3’ is a “Surreal” Experience

by Samantha Bergeson September 8, 2021
written by Samantha Bergeson

Mario Kart racing, flash mob scenes, and a love triangle (or square?) for the ages: It does sound like “The Kissing Booth 3” is a “surreal” conclusion to the beloved YA Netflix series, so it’s no wonder star Meganne Young wants to reflect on the five-year journey to make the three films.

Exclusive: Singer Josh Tepper Talks Collaboration With Influencer Madisyn Shipman On Duet

by Samantha Bergeson September 7, 2021
written by Samantha Bergeson

“Solo” no more.

Nickelodeon alum Madisyn Shipman released her first single, “Flying Solo,” on July 1, and now, she’s collaborating with NYU Tisch School of the Arts grad Josh Tepper for a duet track. The single, slated to be released this fall, pairs the two rising stars (and former family friends) together to kickstart their music careers.

Below, Tepper exclusively revealed the behind-the-scenes details of working with the former Game Shakers star, and what fans can expect next.

The Knockturnal: After studying at the iconic LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, then graduating from NYU Tisch, what inspired you to return to your singing roots?

Josh Tepper: This is something that I always wanted to do, but couldn’t figure out the right project. When Madisyn asked me to go on this journey with her it felt right.

The Knockturnal: How did you connect with Madisyn for this collaboration?

Josh Tepper: Madisyn’s family and my family were friendly and we both always had similar career aspirations. I was always impressed that Madisyn went after her dream at such an early age. A few years ago, I visited Madisyn on the set of Nickelodeon’s Game Shakers and was able to see the magic she brought to that show. The process with Madisyn has been amazing and I hope we can collaborate again in the future.

The Knockturnal: How would you describe your voice and singing style? Which artists do you listen to, and whom do you admire most in the music realm?

Josh Tepper: I mainly sang opera in high school, as that was part of the curriculum. Personally, I enjoy singing pop music and music that has soul.  I’m a huge Madonna fan and admire how she had stayed ahead of the trends and doesn’t care what people think. I also love listening to Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Labrinth, and The Kid Laroi.

The Knockturnal: You also were spotted about town with former RHONY star-turned-real estate agent Kelly Bensimon. How long did you work for the model, and can you speak about what having her as a mentor meant to you?

Josh Tepper:  I worked for Kelly as her content manager as well as forming brand partnerships for her. Kelly taught me first and foremost that there is no such thing as a day off and to always be a go-getter because you never know when the next opportunity is around the corner. I have had the opportunity to work at Goop.com as well as with brands Cynthia Rowley and Ilan Bracha, which all taught me that having drive and hard work are the keys to success.

The Knockturnal: We can’t wait to hear the track! What else can you tease?

Josh Tepper: I know this sounds crazy, but when I listened to the  rough version of the song, my English bulldog lifted his head up and had a big smile on his face.

Aww! In the meantime, check out Madisyn’s first solo single below.
