Jazz and Cocktails Shine at The Django in The Roxy Hotel!

by Megan D'Souza August 31, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

Set in the basement of the historic Roxy Hotel, a lively underground jazz club called The Django comes to life every evening. Featuring classic jazz and special Latin jazz nights, this candlelit spot is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy great music.

We stopped by on a Thursday night to enjoy a late-night meal from the hotel’s joint menu and listen to Ian Hendrickson Smith’s band play jazz all evening long. As you walk into the hotel, lines of people waiting to get into the Roxy’s other establishments such as The Oyster Bar and Paul’s Cocktail Lounge get you excited from the buzzy energy floating around. Through the entrance, you see the hotel lobby’s restaurant, which sometimes also has live music. But veer towards the hallway to the right, go down the stairs, and you’ll stumble upon The Django. Perched next to the Roxy Cinema, this “subterranean jazz club” was modeled after Paris’ boites. The impressive space features vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls, and offers two cocktail bars, an opening dining space, and a performance stage.

We started off by ordering the All Heart cocktail, a vodka and lillet rose based drink with grapefruit, lemon, and raspberry. This sweet and bright creation was the perfect opening to our night, and packed a burst of energy and excitement. As the evening went on, we decided to try another cocktail from their menu – the Little Jazz Bird. With rum, passion fruit, and peach, its tropical flavors delighted our taste buds while the luscious music filled our ears. For food, we ordered their Oysters Rockefeller, Meat and Cheese Board, Artichoke Toast, and Mac & Cheese. The oysters were baked with spinach and parmesan, and tasted like a satisfying, crispy creamed spinach dish. Our favorite item was the meat and cheese board, with honey and other add-ons that offered the perfect snack while taking in the jazz. With all the cheese and topping combinations, no two bites were the same and each little morsel was like a mini food adventure. A creative and healthy spin on avocado toast, the creamy artichoke toast with seed bread was both filling and delicious. Finally, we loved the mac & cheese – how could anyone go wrong with comfort food like that late at night?

Our food, the ambiance, and of course the music at the Django was absolutely fabulous, and we can’t wait to come by again to check out their Latin jazz night!

Restaurant Review: A Tavola at La Devozione

by Megan D'Souza August 25, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

Nestled into Chelsea Market, one of the first fine dining restaurants to grace the ever-popular market boasts authentic Italian cuisine, artisan goods, and more. La Devozione splits into 4 sections. First, their to-go pasta bar emulates the typical grab and go Chelsea Market food scene. Their artisan goods table displays hand crafted plates and cups from Italy, colorful Moka Pots, and Dolce & Gabbana collaboration gift boxes, and the walls are lined with bags full of every imaginable shape of pasta (or at least, far beyond the average American pasta imagination – 126 to be exact). The third part is their chef’s table, dubbed “The Oval,” where Michelin-starred chef Peppe Guida provides an interactive fine dining experience.

Finally, the fourth a part of La Devozione is A Tavola, their casual dining area. Featuring a sprawling set of square quad tables, the space has a modern feel that humbly offers you a taste of a storied 110-year old pasta business. Pastificio Di Martino has been making dried pasta for home consumption for over a century, and expanded into the restaurant scene with takeaway in Naples. Now, their first-ever establishment in the United States opened last November, to guests from all over the world. La Devozione is Italian for The Devotion in Italian, and their signature dish of the same name evokes the spirit of Italian dedication to quality cooking and well-sourced ingredients.

Giuseppe Martino, the third generation owner of Pastificio Di Martino, is the restaurant owner. Along with Chef Alessio Rosetti (Hotel Grand Hotel Fasano in Gardone Riviera, Tony May’s SD26, Black Barn), he developed this menu to highlight traditional recipes based on the best ingredients. Bar Director Cristhian Rodriguez (formerly of NoMad Hotel and Eleven Madison Park) works with the bar staff to develop the unique cocktails featured on the menu, and each gets his stamp of approval before it’s offered to guests.

We stopped by on Wednesday to sample some of their authentic cuisine – starting off with drinks, we ordered the Redwood, a cherry and gin combo, and the Fantasma, a pisco-based lemon and strawberry drink. Each had distinct and unique flavors that were the perfect intro to our meal. For our appetizer, we had to try one of their highlights, the Lollipop Di Macaroni, a breaded macaroni and cheese lollipop with truffle-hazelnut sauce. With flavors both familiar and comforting from the mac n cheese and enticing from the truffle and hazelnut, this appetizer was incredible!

Next, for our main course, we had the restaurant’s namesake dish La Devozione. It’s spaghetti cooked in tomato sauce and fresh basil – their take on the classic spaghetti al pomodoro. The standout ingredient in this dish is tomatoes from Sorrento, which are harvested in the summer and canned to send to the US in the fall. In contrast to San Marzano tomatoes, these are richer and sweeter, giving the sauce an extraordinary flavor. The store will start selling these as soon as they arrive from this summer’s harvest, so stay tuned for their arrival on the shelves!

We finished off our meal with a nightcap and some dessert – their Figli Di Fiori cocktail, a cappuccino, and their Paris-Brest dessert. This gin and elderflower cocktail is one of their summer specialties, and was the perfect fizzy and light drink to top off a meal of delicious pasta. The cappuccino was strong yet perfectly palatable, with that satisfying espresso flavor rounded out with creamy, frothy milk. Finally, our dessert had layers of fluffy pastry, hazelnut chocolate creme, and was topped with hazelnuts. Each bite was perfectly creamy from the pastry, sweet from the creme, and crunchy from the nuts – the ultimate combo for a dessert. We loved our meal at A Tavola and can’t wait to come back to try The Oval. We even grabbed some of their signature pastas, the item that made them famous across Italy, and have our eyes on the Dolce & Gabbana box for next time

Make your reservation and learn more about La Devozione here!

AVYA Skincare Channels Ancient Ayurvedic Wisdom for Fresh-Faced Skin

by Megan D'Souza August 22, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

AVYA, an Ayurvedic-inspired skincare brand from the minds of Deepika Vyas and Dr. Tanuj Nakra, recently launched 3 new products. As a skincare aficionado, I couldn’t wait to try out their new items. Over the last month, I tested out the newly developed Daily Milk Cleanser, Daily Detox Clay Mask, and Sheer Tinted Moisturizer SPF 40, along with their fan-favorite Anti-Aging Power Serum, Eye Bright Cream, and Night Moisturizer with Vitamin A. Read more to hear how the products worked and to learn more about the brand!

Seeking to “take traditional Ayurvedic ingredients and implement state-of-the-art technology to concentrate and boost their natural healing powers,” Vyas and Nakra say their brand is inspired by nature, and perfected by science. Ayurveda, meaning “the knowledge of life”, is an ancient Indian form of medicine that encourages “certain lifestyle interventions and natural therapies

to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment.” By combining these principles with their medical and pharmacy backgrounds, the co-founders have created a special connection of Eastern and Western medicine, and harnessed the unique powers of both, to deliver the highest-quality results.

As Avya means “First Rays of the Sun”, I thought it would be fitting to go through the products in the order I’ve been using them throughout the day.

First up, we have the Daily Milk Cleanser. It feels exactly like the name claims, like a creamy milk, and foams up ever so slightly when you massage it onto your skin. The scent of fresh blossoms fills the air, and the mild formula cleans and moisturizes your skin. It’s perfect for first thing in the morning, when you want to remove any residue of the previous night’s skincare, and leaves you with a fresh canvas.

After cleansing, I use the Anti-Aging Power Serum with Vitamin C, one of my favorite ingredients and my favorite product from Avya’s original line. This serum absorbs quickly into your skin and plumps and brightens it up for the day ahead. Vitamin C works great with SPF, so it’s a great ingredient to use in the morning when you can’t use harsher ingredients like retinol or chemical exfoliants, but still want to add something to improve your skin. I also add the Eye Bright Cream, which contains caffeine to brighten and refresh the eyes after a night’s rest, and leave you looking well-rested.

To protect my skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, I apply their Sheer Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 40. This sunscreen / makeup hybrid feels soothing and lightweight on the skin without adding grease, which sunscreens high in SPF are notorious for. I would love to see Avya expand their shade range to fit the skintones of all consumers, especially since their brand inspiration comes from a part of the world where people have darker-toned skin!

When the evening hits and it’s time to wind down, I grab the Daily Milk Cleanser again after removing my makeup (you need something stronger to get off skin and eye makeup) and then apply their Daily Detox Clay Mask for 10 minutes. The scent of Camphor feels comforting and medicinal in a way that evokes childhood for me, and other ingredients like bentonite clay, salicylic acid, and zinc work to clear and deep cleanse your skin. After rinsing the mask off, I’ll apply their Night Moisturizer with Vitamin A, which contains a mild form of retinol and peptides to hydrate, improve fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.

I’ve been using this regimen for about a month now, and I look forward to using the products every evening and morning. The routine is calming and the aromatherapy feels like I’m pampering myself, and my skin definitely agrees with the products. Looking forward to continuing using AVYA’s new line and noticing even more brightening and firming effects on my skin!

Restaurant Review: Antidote in Williamsburg

by Megan D'Souza August 9, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

Antidote, a Dim Sum / Sichuan hotspot in Williamsburg, just launched Jazz Nights on the first and third Wednesday of every month. With a plethora of exuberant cocktails and mouth-watering dishes lining their menu, Antidote has been calling our name for a while now and we couldn’t wait to check it out.

We stopped by on the first Wednesday of August to sample their tasty small plates and catch some live jazz! It was actually the first installment of jazz nights at Antidote, which launched as a new restaurant only 5 months ago, and we had a blast.

We started off our night by ordering drinks from their house menu – the Drunk in Love, a lychee puree-rose cocktail with a gold filigree leaf detail, was absolutely beautiful and tasted sweet, floral, and light. We also tried the Cloudy Enigma, a classic hit for gin lovers with a splash of grapefruit. The Chai-spresso was a unique take on the ever-popular espresso martini, with smoky mezcal and spiced chai to add depth. The last cocktail we tried, the Flu Shot, was our favorite: a yuzu-heavy prosecco cocktail that brightened our meal with its citrusy punch and bubbles.

The first dish we tried was the Sichuan Cold Noodle – a zingy, spicy noodle dish with sesame and green onion, it was an impeccable appetizer. A few bites of this primed us for the flavorful dishes to come, and the spice satisfied that quintessential Sichuan craving. From the dim sum menu, we loved the Siu Mai with Tea-Smoked Duck and the Crab and Pork Soup Dumplings. To freshen up our meal, we tried the Wood Ear Mushroom Salad, which is poached and mixed with chili and lemon sauce.

Another item we tried was the Honey Glazed Short Ribs – the day we went they had a different flavor spin on their menu staple, the Sweet & Sour Ribs. Juicy, tangy, and tender, these ribs were substantial and delicious. Exactly right for when you want an indulgent complement to a light meal. For us, though, the indulgence was about to reach another level. The main event of our meal arrived next: the Dongpo Pork. Scored and glazed to a level of food-magazine worthy perfection, the tender pork layered with rich fat on top absolutely melts in your mouth and is a must-try at Antidote.

After our meal, we learned a bit about the place’s origins from Rudi. The four owners have been in the restaurant business for eight years, and are Indonesian, European, Chinese, and Taiwanese, respectively. They’re all passionate about good fusion cuisine, focusing on making food taste incredible rather than sticking to traditional recipes just for the sake of tradition. To create Antidote, they transformed what was previously an abandoned warehouse near Domino Park into an industrial-chic dining establishment. We can’t wait to go back to Antidote to try some more of the menu items, and if you make your reservation soon, here are some of Rudi’s favorite dishes to spark inspiration:

  • Wood Leaf Mushroom Salad
  • Wontons in Chili Sauce
  • Siu Mai with Smoked Duck
  • Fish with Spicy Bean Paste
  • Antidote Curry Fried Rice

Hamptons Fashion Week: The Inside Scoop

by Megan D'Souza August 9, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

Hamptons Fashion Week kicked off their fourth annual show with bang on Friday evening. With designers like Marina St. Barths, Nicole Miller, and Ralph Lauren hosting runway shows, the town of Southampton was the prime destination for all things coastal fashion this weekend.

The weekend began on Friday evening, with a “shop and sip” event at the luxury boutiques lining Job’s Lane – each store had unique treats such as Scott Protein Balls and Hamptons Water Rose for guests to enjoy while eagerly awaiting the upcoming fashion show. As the white chairs appeared on either side of the road, we settled in for the show. Marina St Barth’s collection held the bold colors, florals and long flowy silhouettes reminiscent of a luxury tropical vacation. Five Story debuted next with drapey and loose, yet structured pieces in serene, wearable colors. And finally, Unsubscribed’s relaxed and effortless “cool girl” looks finished off the show.

Saturday held the most excitement with shows from sustainable lines Equal Human and Gloria Lee, and industry standouts Cesar Galindo and Nicole Miller. Many New Yorkers took the bus into town just for this day’s events, so crowds of people decked out in glamorous attire filled up rows and rows of seating.

The day began with sustainable designers. Equal Human’s line featured colorful paint splatters, a mix of girly and edgy loungewear, and cool use of paneling. These details, coupled with geometric patterns, evoked an “art studio” energy from the collection. Gloria Lee’s loose, romantic silk scarf-based dresses gave a sultry, luxurious vacation feel. The use of hair wraps and a signature orange / blue / yellow color combo on silk was elegant and creative.

Before the evening shows, the founder of Hamptons Fashion Week, Dina Rivera, presented the Fashion Icon Awards. Gloria Lee won for Rising Star of the year, Constance White won for Fashion Media, Cesar Galindo won for Fashion Trendsetter, and Nicole Miller was warmly introduced by Candace Bushnell and honored with Designer of the Year.

The evening fashion shows had the crowd enraptured. Cesar Galindo stunned with boxy, black, edgy designs. Cutouts and metallics featured heavily, as well as a recurring metallic stripe pattern. Galaxy puffers really made an impression, and my favorite detail were the black strings hanging from the back of straps on dresses – leaving a purposeful yet effortless, unfinished look to the garments. Nicole Miller’s designs featured mini structured dresses, whimsical, sports-inspired americana prints, and geometric, kaleidoscope patterns with sequins.

Sunday finished off the weekend with an elaborate brunch at a Southampton estate. Guests dined on fresh flatbreads, lobster mac n cheese, wraps and sandwiches from The Golden Pear, and fresh juices from Natalie’s. Full on Southampton’s specialty dining and excited by the fashion on display, guests departed the weekend’s event space ready to take their inspiration back to the city.

Restaurant Review: Parma Nuova Enchants the UES

by Megan D'Souza July 28, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

Tucked into a beautiful corner in the Upper East Side, Parma Nuova is the latest creation from the minds of restaurateurs Giorgio Manzio and La Masseria Group’s Enzo Ruggiero, Giuseppe Iuele and Chef Pino Coladonato. We stopped by on Monday night to sample some of their menu items!

When you walk into the restaurant, you’re greeted with the quintessential, comforting scene of an elevated New York Italian restaurant: white tablecloths, cherry wooden chairs, a tall candle stand on every table. We sat down before the dinner crowd rushed in, so got to see the ambiance transform from quiet to bustling yet warm.

For our first course, we chose the BURRATINA CON MELANZANE, PEPERONI ARROSTOE POMODORI SECCHI. Served with sundried tomatoes, marinated eggplant, and sweet roast peppers, this preparation turned the typical, but still delicious burrata starter found on every menu in the city, into something bright, unique, and delicious. Our second dish was the INSALATA PARMA, a medley of arugula, radicchio, tomato, peppers, olives, and endives, topped with sheets of parmesan. It was the last day of the heat wave, and we needed a cool salad to revive our bodies – this hit the spot.

We sipped on summery aperol spritzes and enjoyed our appetizers while we excitedly browsed Parma Nuova’s decadent pasta and entree menus. After debating over traditional and modern dishes, we finally settled on GNOCCHI ALLA SPUMA DI PARMIGIANO E TARTUFO, a gnocchi in parmesan sauce with fresh truffles. When the pasta is brought to your table, the server comes with a precious truffle in a glass jar and shaves it directly onto your plate! I’d never seen this done before, and as a truffle-obsessed foodie, I was awestruck. If you’re a fan of truffle, and I’m thinking that applies to almost every single person reading this, you definitely need to try it fresh. Our decadent pasta helpings were completed by their daily special, the Branzino, with roasted carrots and potatoes. The fresh fish was deboned and plated, cooked with a deliciously simple seasoning and the perfect complement to the rich, cheesy pasta.

Before we finished our meal, we had to try some of their desserts – the TORTA DI MAMMA PAOLA, a flourless chocolate cake, and the MISTO BOSCO CON SORBETTO AL FRUTTO DELLA PASSIONE, a passion fruit sorbet topped with fresh summer berries. Offering something luscious and something refreshingly light, these desserts left us very full, and very happy. Before we left the restaurant, we caught up with Giorgio and Enzo to learn a bit more about Parma Nuova’s launch and vision. Officially opening just a few weeks ago, the restaurant offers a similar menu to Masseria dei Vini, just with a few more regional specialties from the Parma region. The La Masseria team is hoping to offer the Upper East Side a taste of the authentic Italian cuisine that has delighted Rhode Island, Palm Beach, and Midtown West for years.

Restaurant Review: 12 Chairs Cafe

by Megan D'Souza July 16, 2022
written by Megan D'Souza

Nestled streetside into the dreamy restaurant-lined blocks of west Soho, 12 Chairs Cafe brings gourmet Israeli food to New York. It started out as a small cafe, and evolved into a neighborhood favorite drawing in crowds of patrons day after day. As you walk by groups of laughing friends and families, you get the easygoing sense of summertime and the scent of fresh cooked food wafting through the air. In the late evening, you might even be able to hear the sound of tambourines and traditional music filling the streets as the dining experience turns into a party. We stopped by on Tuesday night to try some food we haven’t had here before, and fully experience their day to night vibe.

First up, we had the pita with a few small dips: the Babaganoush and Labaneh. As the energy of the restaurant started to build around us, we dipped warm pillowy pita breads into creamy labneh and spiced olive oil, and babaganoush topped with fresh herbs and blended to the perfect chunky-creamy consistency.

After our appetizers, we tried their Shipudim and Arayas. The Shipudim consisted of impossibly juicy chicken skewers topped with tomatoes and served with crispy potatoes and spicy tomato salad. Each bite of hot, spiced chicken paired with the fresh tomatoes and salad captured the beauty of Mediterranean flavors, and reminded us why 12 Chairs is such a beloved neighborhood staple. The Arayas, which are grilled pita filled with minced lamb, were served with the same spicy tomato salad that seems to complement all meat dishes. These packed a punch of substance, and each little triangle really fills you up! These delicious bites were more than enough to satisfy our hunger and then some, but of course, we had to grab some dessert.

First up on the dessert menu, their take on a classic cheesecake. The Israeli style cheesecake served at 12 Chairs is much lighter and fresher than American versions, and a bite of this topped with strawberries really captures that summer feeling. Our second dessert was Malabi, a dish I’d never tried before. It’s a coconut milk pudding covered in pomegranate syrup, and topped with coconut flakes and pistachios. A bit like panna cotta in texture, this creamy dessert was also a refreshing end to our delicious meal at 12 Chairs.

I’m so excited to keep coming to this restaurant to continue trying all the items on their menu as the summer goes on and beyond. If you haven’t tried this spot yet, be sure to put it on your list! And if you go as often as we do, hopefully you’ve discovered some new dishes to sample on your next visit by reading this. Check out 12 Chairs’ website and menu here!
