Cast Talks ‘After Louie’ At NewFest Premiere

by Angelina Fay October 28, 2017
written by Angelina Fay

After Louie, a film centered on the evolution of the AIDS crisis in present day New York City, had its East Coast premiere as the centerpiece of the NewFest last weekend. The premiere was attended by a full cast and its director, Vincent Gagliostro, and sponsored by ACT UP New York (Aids Coalition to Unleash Power).

The film revolves around Sam Cooper (Alan Cumming), a middle-aged gay man, and his relationship with the much younger Braeden O’Reilly (Zachary Booth). Before the film, Gagliostro took to the microphone to thank his entire staff, from his makeup artist to his production assistants to his set designers, and conclude with a few words from LGBT activist and author Vito Russo, to whom the premiere was dedicated.

“Someday the AIDS crisis will be over,” Gagliostro quoted. “Remember that. And when that day comes — when that day has come and gone, there’ll be people alive on this earth — gay people and straight people, men and women, black and white, who will hear the story that once there was a terrible disease in this country and all over the world, and that a brave group of people stood up and fought and, in some cases, gave their lives, so that other people might live and be free.”

The cast of After Louie answering questions after the screening.

After the film, the cast was invited to the front of the theater for a panel question-and-answer session. An audience member asked Cumming how he dealt with taking his character into an “unlikeable zone.”

“As actors, we want people to like us, we just do,” Cumming said. “When you’re a performer, you’re used to trying to make your character appealing in some way, even if they’re a bad character. You want to find the good in them. It was quite hard for me to actually not be charming, to switch off that thing that I’m just used to doing. That’s another reason I said yes to play the part – because I usually playing evil people…charming in a way. But this was kind of someone who was so closed off. But he has a journey.”

In response to a question about the most effective comment he has ever received from an audience member, Gagliostro gave an anecdote about one of the first screenings in New Orleans, where he was approached by two transgender youth. “This film…is to give the younger people the freedom not to hold up these gold standards, and to kind of look into the issues that best concern them,” he said in regards to the classic ACT UP slogans.

“That was then, and this is now,” Gagliostro continued. “Now is very, very different. And maybe they’ll come up with a way to deal with the freak in the White House.”

Cumming, answering the same question, told of the After Louie screening in San Francisco. He had been seated on the aisle, far away from his mother and mother-in-law, to avoid awkwardness during the sex scenes. “But I was glad I sat on the aisle,” Cumming said. “At one point I looked over and there’s this man – older, gay man – weeping. Just weeping uncontrollably.Aand I just thought, this is what its all about. This is why you do films like this. This is why you’re an artist. Because you make people feel that they’re being heard. That their stories are being told.”

NewFest Review: ‘After Louie’

by Angelina Fay October 24, 2017
written by Angelina Fay

After Louie debuted at the School of Visual Arts theater in Chelsea October 22 as the centerpiece film of NewFest: New York’s LGBT Film Festival, which continues through October 24.

The film follows middle-aged artist-activist Sam Cooper (Alan Cumming) as he struggles to reconcile the differences between generations with a new and much younger lover Braeden Reilly (Zachary Booth). After losing his love, William (David Duke), to AIDS in the nineties, Sam finds it impossible to let go of his memory, immortalizing William in film. The movie’s title is derived from a book William had written about his lover Louie, creating an internal perpetuity of relationships in the community that is reflected throughout the film.

Directed by Vincent Gagliostro and written in part by Anthony Johnston (who also plays Braeden’s boyfriend Lukas), After Louie is gripping, timely, and devastatingly beautiful. Cumming provides a stellar performance, making personal the community struggle of now thirty years past. I felt enveloped in the heartbreak of losing William and the confusion of trying and failing to relate to the “new” LGBTQ+  community.

A self-proclaimed “love letter to New York,” says Gagliostro, After Louie expertly portrays Brooklyn and Manhattan both throughout the day and during the night. The cast is varied, eccentric, comedic, and most importantly, authentic. The chemistry among the actors is evident from start to finish.

The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking. Each shot is so meticulous and so deliberate that it was impossible to correctly appreciate each moment with only one viewing. After Louie is evocative and incredibly moving, and a must-see for people of all ages.

ASICS announces new campaign with DJ Steve Aoki

by Angelina Fay October 20, 2017
written by Angelina Fay

ASICS America teamed with Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Steve Aoki to present I MOVE ME, a North American film-oriented campaign designed to connect with new audiences in the fitness industry. Aoki, mostly known for his music career, is also a fitness fanatic, and is the face of the campaign. ASICS unveiled this new project October 18 in California.

Steve Aoki for ASICS: I MOVE ME.

President and CEO of ASICS Gene McCarthy called I MOVE ME “more than a movement.”

“We are setting out to reframe our narrative, deepen relationships with our core customers, and connect with a new generation of fitness-minded customers,” McCarthy said Wednesday. Aoki serves as the project’s frontman and the face of the collision of self-expression, culture, and sport. The film features other athletes like 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion Wrestler Jordan Burroughs, and World Champion track and field athlete and bobsledder and three-time Olympian Lolo Jones. The film was shot in Aoki’s home in Las Vegas and is set to his new album Kolony. The narrative of the film includes success stories of other “movers.”

Aoki at his home in Las Vegas during the film shoot.

“I’m really excited to work with ASICS, an iconic Japanese brand,” Aoki said. “My life is not only about music and fashion, but also fitness, nutrition, and health.” Aoki joins Olympians Burroughs and Jones in their normal training routines.

Olympic track and field and bobsledding star Lolo Jones.

I MOVE ME will continue its release in parts throughout the year, including social content, influencers, and other movers. It will also feature customer-geared “offline” activations, one of which being the opening of a new ASICS Flagship store on 5th Avenue.

ASICS claimed its desire to change the way fitness is perceived and experienced and to spotlight fresh and distinct forms of movement and fitness. McCarthy highlighted the newness of the campaign in response to the declination of youth sports participation across the nation.

“While other brands are saying – be like him, be the best – ASICS is taking a different route at inspiring a new appreciation for movement for younger generations,” McCarthy said. “That’s what ‘I MOVE ME’ is all about.”

Through Her Lens Filmmaker Program Kicks Off its Third Year

by Angelina Fay October 19, 2017
written by Angelina Fay

Tribeca Enterprises and Chanel hosted the third annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program kickoff luncheon Tuesday. From October 17 to October 19, the conjunctive companies support, celebrate, and promote the work of women working across the spectrum of entertainment jobs: actors, directors, writers, producers, casting directors, and costume designers. The luncheon, held at Locanda Verde, began the three-day workshop, which finishes with a film competition. The winner will receive full financing for production costs and support of Tribeca Studios to bring the project to fruition.

Jane Rosenthal and Paula Weinstein, executive chair and executive vice president of Tribeca Executives respectively, spoke of the importance of supporting women in the entertainment industry.

Executive Chair of Tribeca Enterprises, Jane Rosenthal.

“When you hit success, when you take another step forward, it’s not enough,” Rosenthal said. “Make sure you pull another woman up with you. Women producers, select women directors. Women directors, hire more women designers and crew. Produce and direct the work of women writers. Women in power, commit to mentoring the next generation of women.”

Weinstein remarked that her own Hollywood experience had been nothing like what she and Rosenthal are promoting now: “In the 70s, my generation of women in Hollywood used to look at each other with envy over their jobs. There was no sisterhood.”

The workshop includes master classes taught by writer and director Amma Asante, actor Dakota Fanning, producer Donna Gigliotti, composer Laura Karpman, producer Riva Marker, and costume designer Sandy Powell. The program also includes mentors for each field of the entertainment industry, meant to advise and support the program’s participants. Notable guests included Olivia Wilde, Kyra Sedgwick, Lola Kirke, and more.

“Today women are committed to each other,” Weinstein said. “They wouldn’t consider a day without reaching behind to pull someone up or to hold a sister by her hand and encourage her to do well and not see her success as less success for them but rather that it is success for all of us. If we don’t approach it this way, our stories won’t be told.”

Film Review: ‘Entre Nos Part 2’

by Angelina Fay October 16, 2017
written by Angelina Fay

According to a study conducted by Columbia University in 2014, Latinos were better represented in the mainstream media in the 50s than they are today. The report cited a “narrower range of stories and roles” – something that Shayla Rivera, one of the three stars of HBO Latino’s Entre Nos: Part 2, reiterated on the red carpet before the premiere.

Shayla Rivera, Puerto Rican comedian, mother, ex-rocket scientist, and one of three stars of Entre Nos: Part 2.

The second installation of the purely Latino-comic special, and the first original comedic content aired by HBO Latino, revolves around three distinctly different yet equally successful comedians. In watching the premiere, I found, surprisingly, that though my roots are Latina, I did not have to relate to the comedians’ nationalities to understand and relate to the humor. Much of the sketches were spoken in English with some “Spanglish,” yet I found that the non-Spanish speakers were left all but confused.

The special really did illuminate the gaping void in Hollywood and in comedy. Latinos in media are almost always the sassy, spunky, comic relief – but Entre Nos depicted them as also nerdy, goofy, and most of all, intelligent. This is a realm that is starkly misrepresented and extremely difficult to ignore; when asked to name Hollywood’s big name Latinos/as, most people are not so quick to answer.

Mexican-American comedian Frankie Quiñones getting some laughs before the premiere.

Entre Nos: Part 2 is a spontaneous and hilarious addition to this Hispanic Heritage Month, and more importantly, to the continued efforts of diversification in Hollywood. Shayla Rivera, Vladimir Caamaño, and Frankie Quiñones, are no doubt Latinos, no doubt native Spanish speakers, but moreover, they are comedians just like Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K., Sarah Silverman. And they deserve the same recognition. There is an overwhelmingly large fount of Latino talent that is just waiting to be discovered, and HBO Latino achieved what I’m sure will be the first of many successes for the Latino community.

On the Scene: ‘Entre Nos’ Part 2 Premiere

by Angelina Fay October 14, 2017
written by Angelina Fay

HBO Latino presented Entre Nos: Part 2, a special featuring three Latino comedians, at Cinepolis on October 12 as part of the New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF).

The special is the first original comedic content aired on HBO Latino, and features three comedians who were ecstatic about the project from its conception.

Caamaño, Rivera, and Quiñones at the red carpet before the premiere.

Shayla Rivera, Puerto Rican comedian, mother, and ex-rocket scientist, prides her comedic style as “the truth.” On the red carpet, Rivera spoke about the conception of her philosophy: “My biggest inspiration when I first started in comedy was George Carlin. I would sit there with my dad and we would laugh, and I would see how, honestly, the funniest thing out there is what we all do but we don’t talk about. That’s the truth. If you shined a light on the thing that we do behind closed doors, people will just laugh with you.”

Vladimir Caamaño, one of Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch, is a “true New Yorker,” he says. He has performed at almost every comedy club in the city, and has been for years. His comedy sketch in Entre Nos centers around making fun of the rich. At the panel after the premiere, Caamaño claimed that since poverty is not a choice, neither is being rich, and that coming from the “other side” gave him a good perspective with which to create a comedy sketch.

Rivera and Caamaño at the panel discussion.

Frankie Quiñones has been dubbed a “one-man variety show.” He has introduced and perfected multiple personas in his routines throughout his comedy career, and has performed overseas for troops in Japan, Europe, and the Middle East.

Rivera, Caamaño, and Quiñones shared similar opinions on the importance in displaying multi-faceted Latino comedians.

“There is so much Latino talent out there, completely untapped,” Rivera said.

When asked about the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of Latinos both in Hollywood and in comedy, she said, “They think I can only play a maid, or only play a nanny, or the hot, sassy, whatever…which is not true. I can play a scientist, I can play a judge. What I found is that it is not as much our problem as it is their perception. And they still haven’t really understood that we’re all different, we all have different tendencies – like they are.”

The special, hosted by comedian Ben Gonzalez, will premiere on all HBO platforms on October 13 at 9:30 p.m.
