Array Releasing, a diverse distribution collective, announced a new double feature theatrical experience they’ll be touring around the country.
Ayanda and Out of My Hand are the two films making up the collective’s Fall 2015 release. Viewings of the double feature begin on November 13 and will be hitting major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington DC and Houston.
Ayanda, written by Sara Blecher, is a coming-of-age story of a young woman trying to save her fathers car repair shop. Set in a lively community in Johannesburg, the film takes on the topics of love, risk and triumph as the protagonist tries to preserve the memory of her father. During its world premier at the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival the film took home the Special Jury Prize in the World Fiction Competition.
Takeshi Fukunaga’s Out of My Hand follows the humble life of Liberian rubber plantation worker. Extreme working conditions, failed unionization and corruption leads the man away from his family and country to New York City where he must confront his feelings of isolation and belonging.
The collective is dedicated to amplifying the works of people of color and women, and both films demonstrate the diversity of what filmmakers can create. In a statement Array’s Executive Director Tilane Jones said, “A drama dissecting love in all forms directed by a South African woman and a story of migration and masculinity directed by a Harlem-based Japanese man, both starring all-black casts, prove to be a powerful duo.”
