Adult Swim is resurrecting fan favorite FLCL for two new seasons with animation studio Production I.G.
The continuation will consist of two brand new six episode seasons. Episodes will air during the channels “Toonami” block. “FLCL has become an anime classic over the years, yet it has remained vibrant,” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, co-founder, president and CEO of Production I.G. “This new season will capture the hearts of both longtime FLCL fans from around the world and new anime viewers.”
The new season will pick up several years after where the show left off with Naota and Haruhara Haruko. Two entities, Medical Mechanica and Fraternity, are currently caught in a war moving across the galaxy. Meanwhile, Hidomi is a teenager convinced nothing incredible will happen in her perfectly average life. But when the Medical Mechanica start attacking her town she discovers a secret about herself that could save everyone but only her teacher Haruko can unlock.
Senior vice president and creative director of Adult Swim On-air Jason DeMarco said, “I’m beyond thrilled to be able to produce a sequel with the original creators, for Toonami, where it belongs.” Original series Creator Kazuya Tsurumaki will be returning for the new seasons as a supervisor. The team also includes Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass), character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and writer Hideto Iwai (Last Dinner).
So far there is no solid date for the premier. Adult Swims saying it will be sometimes in late 2017 or early 2018.
