There’s something magical about the holidays when trains choo choo through twinkling winter landscapes, tiny villages come to life, and the spirit of the season fills the city.

There’s nothing like New York City during winter, and trains truly are such a staple. From miniature locomotives weaving through gardens to historic subway cars carrying passengers back in time, New York City offers the fast track to festive train experiences. Whether you’re marveling at the craftsmanship of a model city, enjoying a lively evening with seasonal drinks at the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, or hopping aboard a vintage subway for a nostalgic ride, these holiday train adventures are sure to spark joy and create memories that last long after the last bell rings.

New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show

Step into a miniature winter wonderland at the New York Botanical Garden, where model trains weave through a landscape of more than 175 New York landmarks, all crafted from natural materials like bark, leaves, and moss. This beloved holiday tradition has been delighting visitors for decades, combining artistry, engineering, and seasonal cheer in one enchanting experience. Kids and adults alike will marvel at the intricate details—from tiny bridges and tunnels to charming miniature villages—while wandering the lush gardens in full holiday splendor. Open day and night, the show also features Holiday Train Nights, lively after-dark celebrations where you can sip seasonal cocktails and mocktails, enjoy performances of holiday classics, grab sweet and savory bites, and find perfect photo opportunities throughout the miniature cityscape. The “Bar Car” returns for guests 21+ on the Hudson Garden Grill Patio, and the NYBG Shop makes holiday shopping easy. Be sure to grab a hot cocoa during the day, or make it a night to remember with this festive evening experience—the Bronx tradition always brings joy, no matter the season.

New York Transit Museum Holiday Train Show

The New York Transit Museum’s Holiday Train Show runs from November 13, 2025, through February 2026 at the Grand Central Terminal Gallery & Store (89 E 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017). The exhibition is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closing only on major holidays. While visiting, don’t miss the 2025 Holiday Fair at Vanderbilt Hall, running November 10 through December 24, open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM–7:00 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM–6:00 PM, and Christmas Eve 10:00 AM–6:00 PM. Beneath Grand Central’s glittering chandeliers, the 6,000-square-foot market offers handcrafted jewelry, pottery, artwork, and more, plus complimentary gift wrapping at the Gift Shop for any purchase from the fair or elsewhere in the terminal.

Celebrating its 21st year, the Holiday Train Show brings the magic of miniature trains and New York City to life. Lionel model trains—including Metro-North, the whimsical Polar Express, and vintage subway cars—travel a 34-foot, two-level “O” gauge layout from a miniature Grand Central Terminal past iconic landmarks all the way to the North Pole. This year’s display also honors the 40th anniversary of MTA Arts & Design, featuring bold artwork by James Yang and Erin K. Robinson. Whether you’re a longtime train fan or visiting with family for the first time, the exhibition and Holiday Fair together offer a perfectly festive New York experience.

Holiday Nostalgia Rides

Step back in time aboard vintage 1930s subway cars with the New York Transit Museum. These R1/9 cars—complete with rattan seats, paddle fans, and period advertisements—bring the charm of Depression-era New York to life.

Running every Sunday in December from 10 AM to 5 PM, the rides depart from 2 Av–Houston St (F line) and 96 St–2 Av (Q line). The trains can get crowded, but it’s part of the fun—New Yorkers often show up in historic garb, making the atmosphere festive and lively. It’s not just a ride; it’s a totally cool, immersive experience that blends holiday cheer with history. Whether it’s your first time or a returning tradition, the Holiday Nostalgia Rides are a must-do for train fans, history buffs, and anyone looking for a uniquely festive New York adventure.

Departure Schedule:

  • 2 Av–Houston St (F line): 10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, 4 PM

  • 96 St–2 Av (Q line): 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, 5 PM
